Anything goes - Kanotix/Linux Art

Titel: Kanotix/Linux Art
I have finally created a thread so all this is together as promised. I'll add to it as I make more. Feel free to add your own. I had a look at the Kanotix gallery but it's a bit difficult for my monolingual brain, perhaps somebody can move some of these onto it.
You may want to visit my website to get hold of everything too. You will also find more generic debian art there as well.
You can also find some demos here.

How to use these icons
Don't install these as a full icon set. (apart from my full set which is installable as a deb) They only contain the one icon (in all sizes needed for KDE) not a full set. I suggest that you simply open the archive and copy each icon into /usr/share/icons/hicolor/size/apps. The folder structure in the archive will make it clear which go where. You will need to do this as root. I recommend that you use the SuperUser mode Konqueror. It normally lives in kmenu>system>more apps. (or open a shell and type sux and then konqueror)
If you place them in these directories they will become available regardless of your scheme. The kmenu icon is now standard in Kanotix so a dist-upgrade will put it there if you use the standard set. I'll leave it here anyway so its easier for people to integrate it into their custom sets

It's still a little big to work. I'll let you know when it's actually ready (tomorrow all going as planned).
The grub image is buried in the cpio archive /boot/message but you will need the latest grub that comes with 2006 to use a jpg.

This is a candidate for the 2006 release. I just want opinions on how to improve it at this stage. Does it need extra details like "Linux/GNU" or "Knoppix"? I don't want form to supercede function.

well, i usually resize the cd label picture in openoffice draw. there i can put it to the right location on the paper, too. so a hi-res version would be cool! the more hi-res, the better!

A background (or two) where there's just the swimming penguins, or just the cloudy sky. Three horizontal bands with three images in the background is a bit too "busy" for a desktop background, but that's just my opinion.

You're quite right, I should have said gxfboot > 3 for the grub.

For the bootsplash, last time I checked acritox's bootsplash didn't work on kernel 2.6.17. I guess that will change if it hasn't already. I intend to have a play with splashy in the near future which should remove the necessity to patch the kernel like bootsplash does.

OK, I'm a convert. Yeah, baby. Oh, yeah. Nice work, Cathbard.

In order to consolidate the current installation instructions, here they are. Please correct mistakes.

To install the new grub boot screen (as root):

- Make sure you have the packages "grub-gfxboot" and "gfxboot" installed and current. If you update them, reinstall grub (e.g. "grub-install /dev/hda" to put it on the MBR of the first hard drive; or "grub-install /dev/hdb1" to put it in the boot sector of the first partition on the second hard drive -- and think before you hit Enter!)
- Download and install kanotix-graphics_0.6.1_all.deb (with dpkg)
- If you get a message telling you that "/boot/message" is the wrong one, back it up (e.g. "mv /boot/message /boot/message.original") and create a symlink to the new one ("ln -fs /boot/message.hd /boot/message")
- Test it out!

To install the new bootsplash background (as root):

Note: This will only work if you're running a kernel that Kano produced. If you have a kernel by slh (one that has "-slh-" in the name), it won't. (Thanks, op4latino.)

- Make sure you have the "bootsplash" package (and dependencies) installed. (You may need to let it uninstall "busybox-kanotix" and "kanotix-terminalserver" in order to install dependencies.)
- Download bootsplash-theme-kanotix-0.6-1_all.deb
- Download install-bootsplash-acritox.sh:

# wget -N http://www.andreas-loibl.de/linux/scrip ... acritox.sh
# chmod +x install-bootsplash-acritox.sh

- Install a bootsplash theme other than the Kanotix theme, such as "bootsplash-theme-newlinux":
# apt-get install bootsplash-theme-newlinux

- Run "dpkg-reconfigure bootsplash", select the newly installed theme, and leave all the other choices at their defaults
- Run the "install-bootsplash-acritox.sh" script
- Install bootsplash-theme-kanotix-0.6-1_all.deb (with dpkg)
- Run "dpkg-reconfigure bootsplash" again; this time, choose the new Kanotix theme, and leave all the other choices at their defaults
- Run the "install-bootsplash-acritox.sh" script again
- Test it out!
- If you want to see the boot messages instead of the progress bar, change "splash=silent" to "splash=verbose" in /boot/grub/menu.lst

That's a loaded question. What kanotix are you running? You need a recent grub (gfxboot>3)

As far as I'm aware, if you have a fairly up to date kanotix then it's:
apt-get install kanotix-graphics
and then you may still need
wget -qO- http://kanotix.com/files/fix-kanotix-graphics.sh|sh

Then you should have the themes available in kcontrol. There is a kdm theme manager in System Admin and the splashes are in appearances and themes.

Things like the xmms skin and beryl have to be done manually by downloading the files from the first page of this thread (is it all still on one page?)
There's other hints buried in the pages of this thread too. I see that bootsplash may become standard in new Kanotix kernels too so acritox's script will work for all the bootsplash fans. Smilie

Just add the following to the bottom of your /etc/apt/sources.list
Code:
#Cathbard
deb ftp://cathbard.com/ ./
You will have to be root of course.
You will also have to gpg sign it. To do that open a konsole and:
Code:
su
gpg --keyserver wwwkeys.eu.pgp.net --recv-keys 4E3866DB
apt-key add /root/.gnupg/pubring.gpg

Then you can start installing:
Code:
apt-get update
apt-get install cathbard-icons-kanotix

Now it should be available in the Appearances> Icons in your control centre.

My repo will always just be art and stuff, no programs that might interfere with your system.

PS: Also in the repo now:

Kanotix Penguins XMMS theme:
apt-get install cathbard-xmms-kanotix-penguins
When you go into the skin browser in xmms there are two directories listed that you have to click on, this will be in /usr/share/xmms/Skins.

Kanotix Penguins Amarok theme:
apt-get install cathbard-amarok-kanotix-penguins
don't forget to change the colours in amarok to those in the readme (/usr/share/apps/amarok/themes/kanotix-penguins/Readme) or use funky monkey.

Hint* Open konqueror and type this in the location field:
apt:/search?cathbard
that will list all packages available since last apt-get update. Then just bookmark it and you can see all the new stuff at a glance, just run an apt-get update and visit the bookmark.

Very nice work, Cathbard! Especially your Kanotix emerald theme, which I've been using on other distros besides Kanotix. Winken

Thanks eco2geek. I must do some more emerald themes and put them into debs. My button making skills have improved recently so I really should knock up some new ones. I push my old machine too hard to run compiz (or whatever) so I always forget about it.

And now for something completely different:

Tux Ice Pool

(just click on it)

Tux was drawn in inkscape and the rest was done in gimp. That's a frozen stream running into a frozen pool in New Zealand (a gpl image).

i have installed kanotix icon theme on thorhammer, but there are other icons from another distro in it......

Those icons aren't coming from my set. My set is for KDE and that looks like a gtk app to me which will be pulling the icons from somewhere else.
Sorry but I don't do gnomes, I can't stand the little blighters. Winken

Titel: Audacious
I've repackaged the kanotix xmms theme for audacious so you can have it in both apps now (debian are dropping xmms in future releases, much to my chagrin):

Audacious Skin
click on pic to dl the deb or
apt-get install cathbard-audacious-kanotix-penguins - if you have my repo enabled
Cathbard - 03.04.2008, 12:29 Uhr
Titel: konqueror watermark
I've created a background for konqueror. If you have my repo enabled just use:
apt-get install cathbard-konqueror-kanotix-watermark
otherwise just click on th image to download the deb.

Once installed it will be available in konqueror in:
View > Configure Background
