Finally the new Amarok is out. I just got it and it's working great! Thought I'd let everyone know. It's in the repo's so you can apt-get it. Enjoy!

I did run into one problem being after the upgrade, my collection dissappeared and after rescanning, it was still blank. So far I am the only one with this problem but thought I would post the solution just in case. After trying everything, I discovered that by moving the ~/.kde/share/apps/amarok directory to a temp one and restarting amaroK the problem was fixed. I then exited and copied back over my albumcovers and themes directory and also the streambrowser_save.xml file. Starting amaroK back up again everything worked perfectly. Sehr glücklich Enjoy the new version, it's definently nice!

Update: This seems to be if using sqlite, mysql does not seem to be affected by this (to my knowlege)

my collection is blank as well... all the artist and album names, but no files. Rescanning doesn't help. do you mean rename ~/.kde/share/apps/amarok to soemthing like ~/.kde/share/apps/amaroktemp then restart and rescan? are the album covers and themes in that dir?

Ok, I have renamed ~/.kde/share/apps/amarok and restarted.. rescanning is taking forever. Its been about 15 mins now and I'm still on 7%. I only have about 20GB of music, I'm sure it didn't take this long before... Oh well! I'l keep you posted!

Well, its finished rescannign and still same problem.. all artists and albums titles, but no actual files...

What do you suggest?

ok, did my first remote dist-upgrade! (I am not at home, and am using the computer using vnc and ssh), and amarok works. Must have needed a shove to remember to change things!

Yeah its cool isn't it. Like the mood bars... bit different isn't it!

Thanks for the heads up, MikeShepard! I'm getting it now!

EDIT: I got it, and my lyrics weren't working. The aforementioned folder renaming fixed my collection, but not the lyrics fetching. After evaluating the error code, I realized that the lyrics scripts relied on ruby. A simple "apt-get insall ruby" solved the lyrics fetching problems. amaroK 1.4 is SEXY.

Thanks for the post! I upgraded and love the new version. I have been amazed by this app since I first tried it a few months back.

BTW - my collection was intact after the install... Yay!!

EDIT: Oops... I thought they were there but had to do the trick in order to see the actual individual files and not just the folder names.

What's that about the mood bars? And: did the points system changed? All tracks stay at 0 and when I manually set a song to a higher value it is reset to 0 after playing...

Hey Jesseman! Thanks for the lyrics solution, didn't even notice it but same problem here. Ruby fixed it. I'm just trying to figure out now how to get the gapless playback working, I don't see an option for it anywhere. But fear not, I will post a solution when I figure it out.

Also I'll figure out the rating problem in a bit, it seems to be another problem with sqlite, running mysql instead does fix the problem. It seems the rating/score for sqlite is stored in a file at ~/.kde/share/apps/amarok/current.xml . I'm not sure yet why sqlite doesn't add the info to the file, but I am still working on it. Mysql stores the info in it's data base under amarok -> statistics -> song which would explain why one works and the other doesn't. Haven't given up yet Smilie

FYI: I am also posting all these solutions on the amaroK forum for the developers to know, so no need to repost there.

If you turn on Mood Bars in the settings dialog and then show a mood column in the playlist you get a weird colour representation of the music.... not sure how its calculated, but its interesting...

theres no dynamic shuffle either Traurig is normal shuffle the same? I liked that mode!

What's "a mood column in the playlist"?

rich.bradshaw - 17.05.2006, 09:15 Uhr

right click on columns in the playlist part of the window, where it says title, artist, year etc and select mood. But makes sure you haev turned it on in the settings dialog first.
Mike Shepard - 17.05.2006, 09:33 Uhr
Titel:
The "moods" is a change to the song position bar. Instead of a single color and a pointer showing where you are in the song, this changes it to sheme of different colors on both the player window (if enabled) and on the bottom of the playlist window. It can be enabled under Settings -> Configure amaroK -> General -> Use Moods (check box). It's kinda cool, try it, you might like it Smilie

You can also do it in the way mentioned above post, which will add a column next to every song with a mood bar next to it, but I prefer just having it on the position bar. Sehr glücklich

Rick,

Struggling here! Tried right-clicking just about everywhere and don't get the list you mention. Mood ticked in preferences.

In the playlist window where your songs are displayed. On top of them is a row which says: Title, Artist, Album, Length, etc... Right-click on there and go to Show Column and then click Mood at the bottom. That should add a column to the far right of your songs which will show a mood bar for the song playing and others.

Mike Shepard - 17.05.2006, 13:14 Uhr

ok, in answer to the whole mood questions. It tries to determine what songs you would like to hear based on your mood, so you play one song and click the column it would group others in that row with similar colors, allowing you to easily make a playlist. This is determined by how often you listen to a song, what songs you listen to in that same songs list, ratings, scores, etc.. How often a song is skipped seems to play into this also. There does not seem to be a clear answer yet but that is what I gathered. It is there to help you build a playlist according to your mood, hope this helps. I have to play with it more to give a better answer but that is the basic idea.

It's a cool idea though, I'm going to have to mess with it. I really like the idea. Sehr glücklich

@Mike Shepard,

i'm sure you already figured it out, but if not: you can enable gaps between songs or song2song-fadings in the options ...

? was how does it analyse an MP3 and come up with some view of the 'mood' of the song. A playlist of 12 songs came up with a set of mood profiles in about 5 seconds.

The crossfading is enabled though Setting -> Configure amaroK -> Playback --> (check) Crossfading. And then select the how much you would like (I have mine set at 4000ms).
One of the new features of 1.4 is gapless playback. It is supposed to be a feature as long as you have xine-lib 1.1.1 installed. I do but still haven't figured out how to enable it, I did post this in the amaroK forum and am awaiting an answer. I will post when I figure it out Smilie
Edit: I did get one reply saying that if crossfading is disabled then gapless playback is autmatically enabled, I haven't been able to try this yet, but will play with it soon.

drb:
The analysing is done, by how often you play the song, when it was played last, rating, score, what songs are played around the same time as that song, how often a song is skipped, etc. All this info is stored in the database, so even if you just enabled the moods it will draw on what info is already availible from before. I'm sure it does some/alot of guessing also. Like said this is what I've gathered on it so far.

Cheers,
Mike

phren,

amarok with libxine was playing mp3-files gapless without crossfading even with 1.3.8 onwards. Don't know, what they do, but there are now two cult-players: foobar2000 in Windows and amarok in Linux. Hope the amarok-people are doing a Windows-version, to rock the rest of the world Smilie

Good news! An upgrade to amaroK is in the repo's now and it looks the the sqlite problem is fixed now. I have my ratings and favorite count is fixed, so you don't need to switch to mysql anymore. Keeps getting better!
Also it seeems gapless playback is enabled by default if crossfading is not enabled, btw. So upgrade and enjoy!

Cheers,
Mike

BTW -- www.kde-look.org has themes for amaroK, the Slightly Altered Blue Moon theme is the best http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=33619

Perhaps Amarok should be put on Slim-Fast Sehr glücklich

Valid point though...maybe the Amarok dev team can consider some performance and resource optimizations?
Mike Shepard - 31.05.2006, 07:46 Uhr
Titel:
Well doing some comparisons it seems foobar uses about 3000K, winamp uses about 10500K, Windows Media Player using 11000K and amaroK does seem to rank higher than all these. But I can't seem to get an exact amout used by it. (I'm sure someone will post it exactly later.) ps shows it using about 50000k but this is incorrect due to the shared libraries used. Read this article to understand better http://virtualthreads.blogspot.com/2006/02/understanding-memory-usage-on-linux.html So even though foobar may be more efficent I would still rather use amaroK. As music is one of the most used things on my computer and my music is very important to me, I would rather use on of the best programs I can find to play them. I definently want the crossfade for my music and the OSD bar is very nice, especially when listening to streaming radio. I do agree though that some people would prefer not to have all the feature available in amaroK so having a lite version also might not be a bad idea. I suppose it is all to personal preference but I am very happy with amaroK. (just my opion)

Cheers,
Mike

Music is most important here too. Amarok is far superior to the other linux audio players, and thats a sure fact. My only gripe with it (apart from its name sounding like ANORAK hee hee) is that it is rather heavy. When ive spoken to amarok devs there only comment was that my collection was too large- some 40GB+- thats not exactly large in my experience. I turn off nearly every bell and whistle amarok has aswell. I will however going on using amarok 24/7 to listen to my mp3's until something better comes along..... IF ever...... Peace. Smilie
