Once again I am stuck in init 3 after running the script to enable mouse buttons. init 5 doesn't start X and neither does startx. I'm using Kanotix live-cd now to post. What do I hafta do to restart x?

What's the output of your Xorg log? Have you tried reinstalling your graphics driver? Sometimes when I have this prob I reinstall fglrx and it fixes....not sure about Nvidia.

2radical,
the script makes changes to xorg.conf, please look at the new one and the one that got saved, maybe change back mouse section.

Now I'm really screwed. I did dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg & still init 5 doesn't restart X. I received the message at the end of it saying "not updating /etc/X11/x file has been customized." I tried startx & got a new KDE with all my old settings gone. Desktop, email, documents everything gone. I'm considering installing pclinuxos & starting over.

Did you startx as root? If you did, you are probably getting root's kde desktop...

Yes I started it as root--I shall try again as regular.

nemesis:: I got everything back--WHEW!--only now amixer & alsa are screwed up. dmesg showed amixer "no such file or directory" and "alsa lib control invalid CTL" It seems very wrong to me that running the mouse script should screw things up so badly. I certainly won't try that again!

joyboy@WorldsEnd:~$ amixer
ALSA lib control.c:816:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL default
amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such file or directory

I now have no sound, & fonts are really huge. I ran fix-fonts & will log out.

If you recently upgraded/dist-upgraded, you may have a bad libasound2 file. I downgraded this file to TESTING per other posts and got my sound back. I have not yet tried to see if it's fixed in UNSTABLE yet.

EDIT: The latest libasound2 is supposed to fix the problem. I have not tried it yet but will later after a reboot. Good luck.

2radical,
sound is fixed today.
apt-get install libasound2
will do the trick.

Fonts are still huge, I don't have my regular entries in the menu--just end current session. Lotsa things are different, but at least I still have my email & documents. when I ended the current session, it went to text mode & init 5 still didn't restart X, but startx did as regular user. So nowI need to figure out how to get sound back. Perhaps to dpkg-reconfigure alsamixergui, I'm not sure.

2radical,
done update before that? the package slipped in 8 hours ago.
apt-cache policy libasound2
should give version 1.0.11-7 0 as installed
and for the miscfiles try apt-get -f install

OK I didn't realize that things would be updated so soon--I now have libasound2 1.0.11-7 0 installed, however I used the -f switch in init 3 earlier with these same results:

root@WorldsEnd:/home/joyboy# apt-get -f install

Stanza #2?? I didn't even know I was trying to sing a song...anyway, I'm not understanding what that error message means, or what I need to do to correct it.

Just a short note to say how much I appreciate the sage advise I get from this forum--thank you very much--kurt

Did a reboot today after ctrl+alt+F1 didn't present me with a normal prompt, & that finally corrected the issues I had with fonts, missing log out menu items, etc. Things are seemingly back to the way they should be, but I have to repeat that this trouble all came about because of running the mouse script which doesn't do what it's supposed to do, as well as screw things up. I don't recommend anybody use it unless they want trouble.

I also made a backup folder in /home for firefox bookmarks and thunderbird mail to burn to cd for safe keeping. Somehow I lost my other cd that had /home on it.
