Titel: Failure to Boot Using Kanotix
Hello:

I have a computer with the following hardware: Intel Pentium D 930+ 3.0 GHz Dual Core with EM64T support.

I obtain the following error with the Kanotix cd-rom:

BIOS Bug, no explicit IRQ entries, using default mptable (tell york vendor)

Accessing Kanotix CDROM at /dev/hda ...

PCI: Failed to allocate mem resource. #6:20000@e0000000 for 0000:01:00.0
ata1 disabling port

Other information:
1) Knoppix boots on this machine.
2) Kanotix boots in failsafe mode on this machine
3) Before it hangs, I get one penguin indicating that it doesn't recognize the two processors.
4) The Kanotix CDROM boots three other PCs including an IBM ThinkPad Model T41.

Can you please help me to fix this problem?

Thank you for your help.

Regards,

Angelo Traurig Traurig

It is realy a BIOS-Bug with the DUAL-Core EMT64

Make a BIOS-Upgrade with the latest BIOS from your Mainboard-Vendor.

rossi,

For what it's worth, I have an AMD64 dual core box with an ASUS motherboard and Kanotix runs fine on it. My install is the easter-rc4 release, dist-upgraded regularly, with the 2.6.16.16-kanotix-1 kernel. Which kernel are you using?

Hello Michael:

I am using the default kernel which you obtain when you click on "Downloads" on the main splash page (http://kanotix.com/Downloads-req-viewdownload-cid-1.html) and then download "KANOTIX-2005-04.iso for a cd burn image.

Last night I installed Kanotix successfully on my IBM T41 ThinkPad, performed a dist-upgrade and lost the xserver. I had great hopes for Kanotix. but this is really drugery.

Angelo

hi rossi,

much has changed since 2005-04 mainly with xorg and it seems a dist upgrade from a newly installed 2005-04 is too much for the system to cope with. my advice would be to download the 2006-easter-rc4 iso and install then dist upgrade from there.

cheers kstevek.

(kanotix is well worth it by the way)

<edit>should have posted this answer in yer other thread, good luck anyhow.

Hello:

I have three identical machines (described below) one of them has Knoppix 5.0 installed, and the other two have kanotix-2006-easter-rc4 installed.

All three installations were successful, and I get a message to this effect. The Kanotix installs give some errors, but it goes by so fast, I can't trap it.

Following shutdown, the Knoppix install boots from hard drive, but the Kanotix installs seem to the ignore the hard drive and does not boot.

I could mount the interactive Kanotix CD, mount /dev/sda1 and look for errors, but I am not sure where to look.

Hi Angelo,

I had troubles with a seagate Pata 300GB, where kanotix wouldn't install too. After changeing the drive against a WD 310GB the install works perfect.

My be your seagate is the fault, not bios not kanotix not kernel. Can also a bios-stetting with the sata and raid setting.
Last time I used Knoppix 4.01 does fail instalation while kanotix installs.

This let me think kanotix and knoppix have added different ide-drivers. Or does knoppix even fail?

Hello:

I found the the problem. Actually, this problem was answered indirectly elsewhere in this forum. The partition was not marked bootable!

1) I used the Kanotix interactive CD.
2) cfdisk /dev/sda
3) toggled on "bootable" for /dev/sda2 and that was it!
4) Both systems now boot just fine.

Best regards,

Angelo

Normaly the partition-tool does it for the first Partition if its a primary. Why this was not done, writecache has the data to write, but told the tool beeing ready. In Fact the tool shuts down the process and the cache got lost.

Can happen with all OS's.
