Networking - Network Printing - a bit different ??? {Solved}

Titel: Network Printing - a bit different ??? {Solved}
I've got an HP 8450 photo smart printer.

Now somewhat amazingly, it supports ethernet.

If I plug it into my network - it can see the network, but I can't for the life of me, get my system to see the printer.

Before now, I've had (and still have) networked laser printers - I can just configure them to the IP address that I want on the printer (currently I have a decent second hand hp 4050).

This HP 8450 seems to work fine if I have it connected via USB, but I'd really like it to be connected via ethernet.

It does have an embedded webserver, but I haven't managed to work out how to make my system see the printer (or the printers IP address, which I'd like to change to reflect the rest of my network).

I understand that I should be able to get into the printers settings from a browser (even when the printers connected via USB), but I can't work out how I'd do that.

I've tried reading the cups documentation but I'm obviously too stupid to understand what it's trying to tell me.

Can anyone point me in the right direction ???

I don't have a network printer, and I don't know what I'm talking about, but last time I ran:
# dpkg-reconfigure hpoj
it asked me if I wanted to configure a network printer.

My problem was how to use a local printer connected to a different computer in the network.

I have finally gotten it to work. First, the printer works locally already. For me to be able to access the printer on a different computer, I have to modify the cupsd.conf file located at etc/cups (where the printer is connected).

I found this wiki/link very useful.

Hope it helps.

I just go to http://localhost:631/ and configure my network printer from there, of course make sure drivers are installed on other machines also.

I was thinking along the lines, that I hadn't set cups correctly, because the default IP of the printer is in a completely different range to what I use for my LAN. I believe it should be possible to talk to the printers internal webserver (embeded) through the USB system, to be able to change the IP - unfortunately all the HP tools are only for windows (suprise suprise).

I'm presuming that if the tools only work on windows (i.e. the tools from the install disc for the printer) it invariably means that if I know enough about how the tools talk to the printer then I can change the printer. It's just that I didn't manage to work out how to get my system to talk to the printer IP address.

Hum? I'll have to think some more on that (but I'll try to see if I can get to it through cups/localhost:631 in the "usual" way.

Printer connected to ethernet: http://ip-of-the-printer:631 to configure them.
printer conected via jet-direkt: http://ip-of-the-printer:9001

printer drivers with cups: cups.conf add ip of the new printer to work with. the extra inf for cups is like the local one.
Shareing the printers to others: add the IP for the extra allowed IP's shareing this printer.

It works great !
I use GNU/Linux debian testing (sarge).

I install (as root) cups with: 'apt-get install gnome-cups-manager'.

hmm. Is that wise

fatbloke , greetings to somewhere in the london, essex area.. ( i think)

there are some threads on cups that you may wish to peruse

http://kanotix.com/PNphpBB2-viewtopic-t-18797.html

note piper post on pp1 and Swynndia post on pp6

have a read.. i took me a couple of goes to get it set,, to primt

Also , you need to set up printing on each PC,, i use the Control Centre>periphs>printers.. add printer,, it takes you through step by step,, its just a matter of which radio button you click,, 9 times out of 10 you will click the incorrect one (grin,, happens to me all the time bugger), try again,, let us know whathappens,, all else fails pop into #kanotix on IRC

Ta very much for the tip(s) there bluewater. I'll have to try them over the weekend though - bit busy workwise at the mo!

As for the location guess, if you haven't visited the UK, you might have missed that just about all of essex is east of the prime meridian, my long' is west, though only just, but the *sex bit wasn't bad either - but it's Sussex, rather than Essex (Sussex being next door to where the "fatboy Warne" is currently captaining the county side in your off season).

I'll post back whichever trick works.

Again TVM to all who have suggested stuff thus far.

Well I'm guessing, but I think it seems to be something to do with how I'm telling the system to talk to the printer.

So I'm gonna try installing the software on my partners laptop and then, in theory, I should be able to change all the IP information so that I can connect it to my network.

It might be that the damn device has various bits of windows protocols set up as default - if it works as I'm hoping, that'll all change.

I'll report back when I've finished playing.

Well thats worked a treat. Once I had changed all the IP address info etc etc, it's very straight forward.

The only reason that I can think of that caused the problem, is that when it was connected to my network, it couldn't locate it's preset default gateway. Although, the default factory settings did have the same IP address for the main IP and the default gateway.

Someone else with networking knowledge might be able to see what the problem is/was - all I know, is that it's working great now Geschockt Sehr glücklich
