Running Kanotix on 1300 celeron w/ 128MB. Boot errors out wanting =>82mb ram. Can boot Knoppix and have created a swap file on FAT32 hard drive.

Cannot make the wireless card work under knoppix.

Can I rename the knoppix swap file to the name the kanotix uses to free up the full kde boot?

The error message states that the system will use different more limited UI but, nothing happens after Okay from the error dialog.

If I can finish the boot then I can try to make the wireless card work.

The problem with the wireless card under knoppix is not being able to get DHCP to work.

Read in the knoppix forum that kanotix has dhclient and other DHCP commands.

Renaming the knoppix.swp file is not necessary. Kanotix will find it and mount it as swap. But I'm not sure whether Kanotix will deem the system ram to be at least 128 MB.

Possible workarounds:
- free up some ram by using AGP graphics card adapter instead of onboard graphics chip
- increase amount of system ram temporarily so you have at least 128 MB of physical ram when installing
- boot Kanotix to init 3 (cheatcode "init 3") and run Kanotix installer in text mode (as root: kanotix-installer)

I will try workarounds. Don't understand knoppix booting w/KDE and not Kanotix on same machine with same ram.

May be a day or two before I get back.

You could also try using a less resource intensive desktop. Simply pass a cheat code on boot:

I need the key to cheat code entry. The where and how to enter them.

I have tried to edit the command in grub but, the edits don't stick through boot.

At the screen that has various boot options (e.g., language, dma on, dma off) and the count down on it, there is a line with commands at the bottom off the screen. Just type to append a cheat code.

I am able to get the wireless card working but, when I dhclient it tries on 255.255.255.255. How do I set the gateway to poll for the DHCP server? Also, The subnet mask. I am using the icewm desktop.

Kwifimanger shows good signal strenght, the Essid is correct. The AP mac address is correct. The is no local IP. I think I am close to sucess if I can force an IP address. My router will pass a static IP even though the DHCP server is working. If I shutoff DHCP from the wireless net card. How do I set a local IP address?

I am confident we will get the WLAN running. Please open a new thread in the "networking" section of the forum and post information on your hardware (type of network adapter, output of lspci) and your network setup.
