tach!

Well, I did not use the script, I used the method Kano describes in the second post here in this thread. And it works with an old graphics card and a newer one. No changes made, newest kde 3.5.5-1 (but worked with all versions of 3.5.5).

I test something and if you remove (rename) your /home/xxx/.kde folder, then beryl works fine.
Problem is, you have to reconfigurate your KDE...

If someone knows, which file in folder ~/.kde/ don't want beryl to start - please tell us here...

I've been running xgl/compiz for a few days which I installed via the install-compiz.sh script and it's been working well but I've been using beryl in suse and it has more features and options so I just upgraded to beryl on kanotix but I'm having a few problems.

I followed the instructions here and installed beryl and emerald then reinstalled the nvidia beta driver and running "beryl-manager" put the icon in my tray but didn't autmatically start the window manager so I closed it and tried running "beryl". This displayed the splash and started up beryl and fully so I added it to my .kde/Autostart.
I rebooted and it was working ok and autostarted.
However, after my next reboot I was left at the login prompt and there was no login screen. I typed startx and it went into kde but beryl started up and there were no window decorations.
At this point various compinations of "beryl" "beryl-manager && beryl" are starting it up but every other time it fails and I get this message

Run as root dpkg -i *.deb in that directory (example: cd /home/piper/beryl hit enter, then type dpkg -i *.deb) you will get some dependency errors so fix them with apt-get -f install everything else should install ok after that, you can double check by running dpkg -i *.deb again, then apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade

I run ATI (this install works for nv too) so I don't know the fixes for your xorg.conf, but mine looks like this

Edit your xorg.conf and add in the section screen :

Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
Option "DisableGLXRootClipping" "True"

If not already done, add this at the end of your xorg.conf to enable the composite extension

Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

Restart X
Run in a terminal beryl-manager

(Note that the two lines that used to go in the "Device" section of xorg.conf now go in the "Screen" section.)

I did and found I needed to undo everything I had done to get beryl working.
Also, do you have xgl or compiz installed? If so you don't need them if you have the nvidia beta driver.

I added the required repository, and then apt-get installed beryl
Then I ran the sequence shown earlier in this thread, i.e.
su
update-scripts-kanotix.sh
apt-get update
apt-get install libxcomposite1
chvt 1
login as root
install-nvidia-debian.sh -c
then
bery-manager

Now that I check, Beryl and Compiz are both installed. Not sure about the other two. Should I remove Compiz?

So my question from piper's post is "Does beryl support ati or is the other way, does ati support beryl?" I have a bit of money invested in my graphics card and don't want to replace it but would like to try beryl since it is supposed to be better than compiz.

Beryl works with Kanotix for me if I use the ATI (not fglrx) drivers and it works well, pretty damn fast too.

Alot of people can get the fglrx drivers (using XGL) and beryl to work, I cannot, but, I also don't give up. My card is kinda old 9800 pro all in wonder (most likely a problem and my xorg configurations) and my next system will have a nvidia. ATI users are kinda screwed till ATI comes out with GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap support and some other things and I don't see that happening next driver release (should be a release every month) or this year for that matter.

Like slh said above, the way I do it, is not recommened and can bork your system, but it works flawless for me, your results could be different.

To answer your question you would have to really read about Xgl and
AIGLX <-----This is ATI's problem

There seems to be a thought by some users that the AMD/ATI fglrx display drivers support the desktop effects (AIGLX + Compiz) shipping with Fedora Core 6. This is actually NOT THE CASE. As of the 8.30.3 drivers, these drivers do not support these effects as the proprietary drivers do not support AIGLX / the GLX_texture_from_pixmap extension needed for operation. Users can only hope that this support will be appended soon. XGL, on the other hand, should run fine with the fglrx drivers. NVIDIA's 1.0-9XXX Beta display drivers currently support the needed OpenGL extension, as well as the open-source Intel Linux drivers and the open-source Radeon R200/R300 drivers. Using the open-source Radeon drivers (FreeDesktop) work great with Fedora's desktop effects. Hopefully ATI's fglrx drivers will add this support soon.

piper,

long time. I guess my question is this, do I want to go to the bother? I have compiz installed and it seems to be working without a problem. What will I gain/lose by going to beryl? Do I want to do this? You know I don't care if the system crashes, just reload and try again. I will make a backup before I try it. I have the an older version loaded so I can copy the image and restore in case I screw up.

Thanks for your help, as always

I think beryl is better/faster Winken I always thought compiz worked better on my machine till I tried the above (not recommended).

Yes, remove all compiz and xgl related packages. With xorg 7.x and nvidia beta you only need beryl.
I would recommend using install-compiz.sh -u (don't forget the -u, to uninstall)
but this wll also remove all beryl/emerald packages also but it does clear everything out and I couldn't get beryl running til I had run that script.
Simply reinstall beryl/emerald again and you should be good to go.
Incidentally, I don't know if the version of beryl in the repos has been updated lately but I noticed quite a few bugs and it didn't have the excellent "burn" effect.
The packages linked by piper (not recommended remember, unless you are prepared for any consequences) are definately faster and better IMO.
Also, those packages were updated recently and I noticed a huge jump in performance.

You can get the compiz script here

Code:
wget -N http://kanotix.com/files/install-compiz.sh

it will be in your /home directory, just cd to that directory by doing ctrl+alt+f1, log in as root and an example would be

Code:
root@KanotixBox   cd /home/piper

Code:
root@KanotixBox:/home/piper# sh install-compiz.sh -u

I think (not sure) you can cd to /usr/bin also (been awhile Smilie ) without downloading the script and using

Code:
root@KanotixBox:/usr/bin sh install-compiz.sh -u

Ok, installed beryl yesterday and it works at least as well as compiz on myt laptop with intel graphic chipset, but it has so many features and it's surely easier to manage.

The only problem I have is: how to put it in the autostart?

I tried to create a link to beryl-manager in the folder/home/user/.kde/Autostart, after deleting compiz, but it doesn't load at kde startup, how should I do?

thanks for your help!

Still no go for beryl or compiz,,,

I've tried almost al suggestions on this forum and others but still no beryl or compiz working.
I tried kanotix compiz-script and other guids on this and other forums but still not working and I did't get any errors while trying.
I have nvidia -beta driver installed ( I get nvidia beta driver screen before login)but there seems to be not much different whit normal nvidia drvier.
I have installed freespire on spare partition and there beryl works perfect.

I think I know where something is wrong:
I followd a guide on howto install beryl on debian system and there was told I had to edit my xorg.conf file , but it was totaly different from the one in the guide,
here is my /etc/X11/xorg.conf
