Installation - 2006-01-RC4 questions

I'm now downloading 2006-01-RC4.iso, & a couple of questions:

What is a good speed to burn at to avoid errors? I've had many problems inthe past because I burned too fast.

Is there a command I can issue to determine if my system supports compiz? I don't have a graphics card, I have integrated VIA graphics.

Thanx

I burn my Kanotix CDs at 8x. Never had a problem. I can't burn slower anyway Winken If you can burn 4x, do it.

In the GRUB boot splash (the thing at the very start of the CD, with the 30 second counter) simply type "compiz" (without "" of course) and press Enter. "compiz" will now be a parameter for the kernel, and if it has everything it needs, you'll have compiz working. if it doesn't work, just post here again.

I tested compiz on several old computers. It worked with Radeon 7500, but not Riva TNT2 or Matrox G450. The screen just froze and I had to reboot the computer. No harm done, though.

I recommend just not to select the highest mode offered by the burner software. I use 8 or 12 on a 24 system. Works always fine. And do not forget to select the "disk at once" option.

8x and DAO is safe...as Kano and others have suggested.

Compiz will only work on SOME Nvidia, ATI & Intel cards. It will not work on your VIA.

I got the iso burned, but the funny (haha) thing was I set K3b to burn at 8X & DAO, but once it started, it said that my NEC DVD/RW didn't support that, so it dropped to 6X, & I thought OK, that's cool, but then once the process started, it reported in the lower left corner the estimated writing speed to be 18.6 (2801 KB/s). Hmmm...Why don't these damn machines do what I tell 'em to do? Anyway thanks mzilikazi for that info on compiz & my VIA graphics. Oh well, I'll see what happens.

I'm gonna reboot later & check out 2006-01. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it works out for me because I really like Kanotix despite the self-induced problems I had w/Easter. Thanks for the advise, you guys. Later,

Kurt

Well I got it installed--didn't take very long at all. (18min) There was no prompt to reboot, but I suppose that issue has already been posted. I had to scrounge around a bit to find the DHCP item in the connection menu--I have a cable modem, but that was no big deal. I'm happy to be back w/Kanotix after my brief sojourn with PCLinuxOS. It's an OK distro, but I don't like the rpm pkg management w/synaptic all that much cause I like to have a more hands on manipulative approach with apt. Also it was much slower to boot & didn't verbose as default. I like to see what's goin on, although I did select auto-login with this release of Kanotix for my wife's ease of use. The simpler I can make things for her, the better. Smilie

I will continue checking this out. It would've been nice to see nano installed, but I did that right away. Also lshw, a hardware listing utility. I'd like to see the debian multimedia repository in the sources.list as well, but don't know if that's a no-no, or verboten here. Later, K

that's a no-no here.

I like nano too, but since the install package already includes mcedit, which is functionally similar to nano, it's not likely they'll add nano, space is very tight in the package.
