I'm using kanotix for about 4 years now as my primairy os , and I'm quit happy with it.
But lately I'm getting interested in the opensuse project, and wanted to test
out the latest version 10.2 .
My question; can I share my /home partition from kanotix with an installation of opensuse 10.2 whitout lose of data or a change to mix up a lot of settings?

That is a very excellent question. It got me curious also and I found this that seems to explain it pretty well. http://usalug.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php? ... highlight=
hopefully that helps

Cheers,

I got from that article, that it's not worth the hassle it might cause, but having a common data partition is a good idea, and then you can put symlinks to make some things common.

... eg if you wanted your firefox bookmarks to be the same, you could put the bookmarks.html (the one you wanted to keep, and be common to all distro's) in the shared partition eg say on /media/hda7, and then in each of your distros you could cd to where your boomarks.html is in your home, then do:
rm bookmarks.html
ln -s /media/hda7/bookmarks.html

If your UID is different for each distro, then you'd have to make the file world-read/writeable:
chmod 666 /media/hda7/bookmarks.html

In saying this, even this can be overwriten without you realizing it with a firefox update. So maybe it's still not worth the hassle?

Hi Guys, and thanks for the quick response.
I readed the discussion on the forum from your link and after that I think its best not to share the /home partition between 2 distros . I just mount the kanotix home parttion as a shared folder under suse I think, so I still can copy configfiles, bookmarks and other files if needed and have less risc to mess things up.

thanks,

jack
