I have simply mephis installed on one partition. I want to install Kanotix on another partition. Will Kanotix recognized my previous Linux distro and add a boot item to grub to boot either into simply mesphis or Kanotix? thanks

No. Thats your turn to add that. Win partitions are detected and added. I see no reason to scan Linux partitions.

How do you add a linux partition to boot? I have 2006-1-RC4 installed on hda1, swap on hda2 and I just put the Easter-RC4 version on hda3. I just want to use to for a couple of things but I don't know how to boot it. Any help would be appreciated.

John

ps: When I installed it I put the mbr on the root partition so as to not mess up the newer version's mbr.

John,

Just add easter on hda3 to the /boot/grub/menu1st file. on your rc4 version, it will look something like this, goes at the bottom, note grub uses different notation for the drives it starts with 0 not 1 so hda3 becomes hd0,2

title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.16.5-kanotix-2
root (hd0,2)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.16.5-kanotix-2 root=/dev/hda3 ro ramdisk_size=100000 lang=us apm=power-off nomce vga=0x317
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.16.5-kanotix-2
boot

You are too fast. After posting I used konquer to open hda3, went to boot, grub, menu list and copied that portion to the menu list on hda1. The first time I rebooted and selected it, it didn't work. I thought I would try it again, rebooted into 2006, went well, rebooted again and selected easter. It worked. Came here to post that I had it working and you had already posted an answer.

Thanks for the help. Just another reason these forums are so great.
