Networking - Updating ndiswrapper

Hi all,

Can anyone instruct me how to update the version of ndiswrapper that comes pre-installed in Kanotix 2006-01-RC4 to the same one that appears in Knoppix 5.1.1? I ask because my USB Belkin wireless device works in Knoppix 5.1.1 but not Kanotix and Knoppix 5.1.1. won't install to the hard-drive (I prefer kanotix anyway).

Thanks,

Martin

Hi Kano,

I'm very much a newbie, can you explain how I safely do the update? Last time I tried a kernel update in Kanotix it broke the X display.

nvidia binary drivers need to be reinstalled after kernel change, thats normal. Best come to IRC.

Hi Kano,

Could you post the instructions instead? I can then forward to others who are stuck on the same problem.

Very easy:

press ctrl-alt+f1

login as root

update-scripts-kanotix.sh
install-nvidia-debian.sh

(similar for ati binary: install-fglrx-debian.sh instead then.)

Hi again Kano,

When I run update-scripts-kanotix.sh I get a message that no update is available. What's that about?

That's expected.

Ok, do I just carry on with the second command: install-nvidia-debian.sh ? By the way, the laptop is a Packard Bell, I don't think there is any NVIDIA hardware in it. My PC uses an NVIDIA card but I'm not making any changes there.

The script checks for NVIDIA hardware, when it has no suitable chip it won't run.

Hi Kano,

What next then? Is there anything I can post her to identify the hardware in the laptop?

If you don't have an irc client, you can use a java client in your browser: http://irc.kanotix.net/cgi-bin/cgiirc/irc.cgi

http://kanotix.com/index.php?module=pnW ... elUpdateEN can give you an idea of how to update your kernel and graphic card. However visit the irc for futher instructions

btw, infobash -v3 can list some of your hardware.

Okay, I've been to the IRC (thanks for the help got there) upgraded the kernel but nidiswrapper is still not working. However, when I try the live Knoppix DVD (which won't install to hard-drive), ndiswrapper works fine.

Is there a difference between what I just downloaded and what Knoppix runs on? Can I do further upgrading? I don't want to change my distro as I like Kanotix,I went through countless distros before settling on Kanotix.

Well the update pack has 1.47 version of ndiswrapper. If that does not work ask in #ndiswrapper - the developer of ndiswrapper is giri.
