Titel: Update Issue, new install
Hello, I just installed 64bit Hellfire. I get the following message when I do a distribution update:

"Failed to fetch http://mozilla.debian.net/dists/squeeze ... ts/Release Unable to find expected entry iceweasel-4.0/binary-amd64/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?)
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead."

I cannot find the correct sources list (sorry probably not looking in the right place), Here are my sources:

# Debian Squeeze
deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian squeeze main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian squeeze main contrib non-free

# Debian Squeeze Updates

deb-src http://kanotix.acritox.com/debian trialshot main

# Kanotix Excalibur

deb-src http://kanotix.com/files/excalibur ./

# Firefox 4

# Kanotix Hellfire

# PPA for Wine

Any help much appreciated.

Welcome to Kanotix jerry525,

well I know the issue. The best/fastest solution is to make a new install with Acritox's trial ISO. That's not an official ISO, just for testing purpose, but it is quit good at the moment. You can find the ISOs here http://kanotix.acritox.com/

If you do not want to use one of these images and stay with the official ISOs you need to do some updates, cause these ISOs are from May 2011. Best way is to visit our IRC and see the instructions from the bot. Just type as message the following step by step
1. "!hellfire" - see instruction nr. 1 for an up-to-date sources.list
2. "!bpo" - to enable Debian backports repo (needed for updating Mozilla apps)
3. "!icedove" - adds repo entrie for Icedove updates
At this point you should make your dist-upgrade and than continue with next steps.
4. "!kernel" - to get the latest stable kernel, or "!daily" for 3.1rc daily build kernel
5. "!nvidia" or "!ati" for new graphic driver

As you see a big list to do. This will take defiantly more time than a new install with the mentioned ISOs.

Best regards,
TheOne

Thanks mate for the fast response, much appreciated, I will go with your advice & install the new iso.

By the way, this was one of very few distro's I was able to install & see something meaningful on my screen - it has a DVI connection, most distro's were hopeless, so respect to you.

I also had issues with nvidia but I'll re-visit after the new install.

Regards, Jerry

Just as addition, try to use the gfx on options at boot menu. Then you got enabled binary drivers on live session and they stay with your installation too. So full 3d capabilities from the beginning.

Ok will do (when I can get my son off facebook)...

Presumably the 3D graphics won't work though until I've installed the NVIDIA drivers?

Or will this do it automatically? ( I've got Legacy Geforce 4 MX440 with AGP8x).

No, it won`t.
Look at my advice in the other thread...

It should work with gfx on and binary driver, but kde4 effects most like are not stable with it. Well there are some systems which do not run well with 96.xx on a newer kernel which would be needed for gf 4 mx.

Tried the install with gfx, I get a nice screen when I boot up from the DVD but the install freezes. I tried it twice, same thing happens. Then I booted up with non gfx, unfortunately I got an unusable screen.

It looks like I'll have to re-install Hellfire & go through that list of tasks you gave me... aaaagghhhhh!!! But not tonight, I need a glass of wine.

Thanks for everyone's help so far, very much appreciated.

Jerry

PS Just a thought - Would I have the same issues if I used the 32bit iso??
