ein Bier bitte
wo ist die toilete

or, really really bad ....

der grosse mann ist ein schiessekopf!!

Of course, that stupid sentence is structured like it would be in English, not German, so it really really sucks gramatically.

Actually, I'm quite capable of typing in English words at a translation website and have translated to German. Winken

Yes definitely - but it is a boring, ugly and un-musical language.

Well, when you listen to the fourth movement of Beethoven 9th symphony or some Mahler's symphonies you wouldn't believe that German is ugly and un-musical. Sehr glücklich

I agree wholeheartedly.

Actually, whether spoken or sung in a beautiful Beethoven or Mahler symphony, I think German sounds pretty cool.

There must be something wrong with me...

I LIKE German! I have even found myself enjoying German music (of course, that just started about a year ago, after having been here for 8 years).

I very honestly prefer the German spoken from Salzburg on east and south, which seems more melodic and carries more emotion than in Germany (where I also lived for a time). The Viennese dialect is great -- can't really speak it, but can understand some of it and find it VERY entertaining to hear!

I have to vote for "not" German, I dont speak it, cant read it, and, mostly, peck at words, to get the "jest" of the complete sentence... In essence... Im lost...

But... to be completely honest, I didnt have this feeling of learning the German Language, as much as I do know, until... I heard, from what I hear, a German Group, what would be called "pop" music back in the 80's, and found myself almost wanting to sing-a-long with it, and after moving to Kanotix, and wanting to "help" more, feeling the need to hit a school up on any German classes... I had the album on record, then to cassettes, and lastly, dug around to find it "finally" come out on CD. Nena - to be precise, the "99 Red Balloons" album. In which, I found, the "English" side of the album to be rather boring, "run-of-the-mill" fare, but, the Side "B" was all done in German... Which, I enjoyed. The music was immaginative, full of imagery, and, in my, "80's native tongue" -=- Rockin! -=-

( But then again, I watched "White Nights" and liked the "rebelistic" decadent "illegal" music they played that they were not supposed to be, too Smilie )

My goal is... to learn German, both read, write, and speak, and be able to contribute more within these forums, and on the IRC... Just have to find a college around this small town that teaches it Traurig

Ahhh, that must be it, because I liked Nena as well! Actually still do.
@ Cuddles: if you like Nena, you might also have a listen to Wir Sind Helden, Juli, or Xavier Naidoo, or even Austria's pride and joy Christina Stürmer.

And yes I know some Ameriacan too, they talked better schwäbisch than german. But the schwäbisch syntax is rather worse.

I'm from NE italy (Friaul) Auf den Arm nehmen
But I wasn't talking about speaking myself, since I've learned standard German, but more about listening and understanding
