Hi all... I am interested in using Kanotix on a USB external drive as a portable computing solution. With help from some of the forum threads and other sources, I setup Kanotix on a spare laptop drive and pulled together some of the ideas and tips by writing up a HOWTO:

"This is a detailed description of the steps taken to setup Kanotix Linux on a USB external drive - creating a extremely portable Linux system with a persistent home directory, the ability to add extra applications, and provide storage accessible on Windows, Mac OS, and other Linux computers."

I hope this proves useful for someone. The HOWTO is located here:

http://biohackery.com/howto-install-lin ... -computing

Kanotix is amazingly versatile. Here in my hometown of Toronto, we have a LinuxWorld tradeshow coming up in a few weeks and I will definitely be burning and distributing a few Kanotix CDs.

Thanks to everyone who makes Kanotix such a great distro!

Daniel

That may solve the issue I have with HD Install on external USB drive (losing autoconfig functionality).

Will I be able to perform a full apt-get update and apt-get distupgrade (providing I reserve enough space for the unionfs image) ?

What about kernel updates (smile) ?

Anyway, I'll give it a try as it should solve most of my portability problems.

Thanks
Dany

I haven't tried it myself... but I think you would be able to do a full apt-get update and dist-upgrade if you reserve a minimum of 4GB for the unionfs image.

You might want to use the KANOTIX-2006-CeBIT-RC3.iso - less packages to update.

Good luck!

I was thinking of doing the same thing! Maybe I'll see you there. Good on you to help spread "the good word" of Kanotix.

Great! If you make it to Linuxworld, drop by the GTALUG (Greater Toronto Area Linux User Group) booth and say hi... I will be volunteering for a few hours there.

I have reposted a much-revised step-by-step tutorial for installing Kanotix on a USB external drive. The link has changed since the previous version, the *new* HOWTO can be found at:

http://biohackery.com/node/4#howto

Hope this proves helpful. It was a real fun project to work on!

maybe one should note here that Kanotix 2006-Easter rc4 does not boot from usb unless one modifies initrd.img - there are threads addressing this point in the forum

Interesting stuff. I have two comments, though:
1. Kanotix-2005-04 is stable but slightly outdated; I would prefer Easter-RC4. On the other hand, people that have VIA chipsets may be stopped cold by the sound server issue which hangs KDE.
2. You could simplify your handling of unionfs somewhat by creating the unionrw folder inside the home directory as described here: http://www.kanotix.com/FAQ-id_cat-63.html#q334

That's an interesting point about unionfs... I am going to give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion!
