Hi, I am Old Nat.

Feel free to move my message into another Forum if you find it fits better - as for I have several things (hd install, wireless, sound etc) I could not classify it.

I try to keep it short but would like you see the background.

I am quite an old Windows man, >15 years of internal experience, working for an american multi.
I also know some other OS, from BS2000 to VMS and mainframes - but I am bloody new to Linux.
I read a lot but the most I did quite not understand for most is for experiences un*x-like typers Smilie

I wanted to start with Linux somehow, then I heard about it a lot, and I totally agree with the whole philosophy behind it.

I waited (lazy dog) only for a forcing occasion and left it always for tomorrow.
Then I got a Knoppix Live CD from a colleague and threw it in my box.
I installed it then to my hard disk and got some troubles.
And then I googled and found Kanotix.

And it immediately convinced me, that there is no more excuse going on using Windows.

***************************************

I tried out 3 different Versions of Kanotix:
- the CeBit RC3,
- the Easter RC2
- the 64 Lite,
on 3 different Boxes:
- an elderly Compak Deskpro EN (660 MHz PIII)
- an IBM ThinkPad T42 and
- an Asus AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+

The Easter RC2 booted fine from CD, but froze at the installation to HD at the point of 8%, on all machines.
I checked the CD, it seems OK, but somehow it does not like me - or my boxes.
So I left it.

The CeBit RC3 booted fine, and installed well on the Deskpro HD, sound and net OK, currently a stabile "quasidebian" box, dual with WXP, as my test machnine.
Booted also fine on my office notebook (there I could not install it of course).
It booted also fine on the AMD box, but I could not get my sound and wireless working: sound did one and only sound and none more, and the wireless does and endless loop at configuring itself - giving all params it begins to ask everything again - but on the AMD I would like to use 64-bit.

The AMD box should be my "production" machine.
I want to use it for editing my own videos from DV to DVD.

Until now I did this on a 3GHz Prescott with WXP and Pinnacle Studio/uLead.
And my Photos I did with Adobe Photoshop.
I have the same now on the AMD box, with a 32-bit WXP, Photoshop, Pinnacle/uLead etc, all functioning perfectly.

But Kanotix can do everything I need, with GIMP and Kino I could do all I need _without Microsoft_ - if I just could get the "big box" running.
And there my woes begin.

The 64-bit lite does not recognize my usb keyboard and mouse at boot - it boots german default.
After boot it uses keyboard and mouse OK.

It goes the same way as above, endless with the wireless.
(Wireless is a NetGear WG311T, HW and connection OK, tested and functions under WXP okay)

It also does not make sounds - only one and once time at the beginning.
I tried alsaconfig and the mixer settings, all seems OK (no complains about sound hardware) but no sound.
(Sound is nVidia onBoard, HW and speakers tested and goes with WXP okay)

The hd install did not work, it does not see the prepared partition and crashes in partitioning.

Then I tried the 32-bit CeBit RC3 in this 64-bit box, it also does the same to sound and wireless but starts the hd install OK and allows partitioning.
It has a problem with reiserfs, can only format ext3 - i did it now and then it was too late in the night to go on - this is the point I am now.

I would appreciate any help here (or also offline to oldnat@hotmail.com if I am asking too silly for the Forum). I can read also German (and Hungarian).

Thank you very much

Nat

Nat,

welcome abroad!

You seem to have stumbled into the same problem, most of us experienced when first trying Kanotix. Kanotix uses high compression technology (not the same Knoppix does), and therefore special care is needed when burning the CDs from ISO-file. Please have a read here http://kanotix.com/FAQ-id_cat-16.html. In short, use high quality CD-R only, and burn in DAO-mode not faster than 8x.

Generally I would not recommend the 64bit version until our next final release is out. Better use the newest RC (Kanotix Easter RC4), which works fine also on 64bit machines - and even on Intel-Mac.

Please take your time to download or manual as most remaining questions (if any) might be already answered there. However, if you encounter any problems you can't solve you are definitely very welcome here and in our IRC.

Happy kanotixing!

Greetings,
Chris

hi old nat,
i think, we spoke on irc for a minute or 2.
welcome anyways. do what slam says for burning the disk, yours might be faulty.
wireless is always a bit tricky on linux, these probs can best be solved in irc.
for the partitioning i preferr cfdisk over qtparted, which is included in the installer. cfdisk never failed me.

Hi,

thanks for the responses.

I checked the CD with md5sum and it seems to be OK - nevertheless I shall wait then for the next 64-bit-release. As for the RC4 I first have to get it. The big problem is, that while day I do not have IRC (bureau net with firewalls), while night I have limited bandwidth to download. So I'll get the RC4 tomorrow, I hope to get it at the site I downloaded RC3; if not, ftp link to an RC4 ISO appreciated.

Now I shall do the partitioning with the SysRescue CD (2.19 gentoo I think) and see tomorrow how far I get...

Question: can I also install a 32-bit CeBit RC3 and do an apt-get update-dist, or better burn the RC4 CD directly and install it from there?

Another question, which IRC CLient should one use still being on Windows (I never used IRC before just Messenger)?

Thanks

Nat

PS yes, Devil, it was me Smilie

oldnat, if you want a more painfree and reliable kanotix experience, stick to 32 bit, I have amd 64, and a test install of 64 bit, but it's not worth the headache in my opinion unless you are involved in the bleeding edge devlepment work.

If you want to get straight to work though, install easter 32 bit on the amd dual box, I just built a box with that and it screams. On IRC, too many times I see people trying to run 64 bit and encountering problem after problem.

then, if you really want to have a stress free life, use wired networking, I don't like headaches, and I like fast gigabit networking connections.

Slam: that's the first time I'd read that explanation of why you need to use DAO to burn kanotix. I think that fact should be added to the faq/download section, it's much easier to understand that it's necessary when you also understand why it's necessary. Now that I've read your explanation of high compression, this finally makes sense to me. It made no sense before, since I'd downloaded and burned many isos with no issues in the past, but of course the key difference is that they don't use that method of compression.

Why not also add that factoid to !dao on irc?

Now I feel better about telling people why they should do that.

Thanks for the advice.

No, I am not a 64-bit developer (yet Smilie), I just want to work with the box. If you say the amd dual-64-box works fine with 32-bin Linux, I believe you: you have experiences, me not.

I am just downloading the RC4 and shall burn it 6 or 8* (DAO did I always). As for wireless, I shall try to make it go, for the box is far from the router and I do not like hanging cables around. And if it works with Windows, it has to work with Linux, basta. I shall start wired, and shall nerve the gurus so long until it works - if they don't kicjk me Smilie

(Perhaps these experiences can be used then by others. This is the whole thing behind it, am I right?)

A pity I do not have so much time I would like to... (now in the office). See you tomorrow, then.
