Google has now released Picasa for Linux. It's been in beta for a while now. This February 2006 article discussed it (they apparently incorporated a run time version of Codeweaver's Cross-Over Office implementation of Wine):

I use Picasa very often under XP. It supports raw files from my camera, allows fast browsing through images, and does little things like straightening my crooked horizons quickly. 
It's not as powerful as many editors, but it's very simply to use and is one more tool in a software arsenal for those that do a lot of work with images. |

Seems to work very well. RAW file thumbnails are the main reason I use it. Runs reasonably quickly on my AMD XP1900 computer.

First tests on my deskotp worked without glitches. I like the sliders, though I would prefer digikam with sliders and multiple windows like xsane.

I've been trying to find a Linux solution that supports all of my imaging needs for a while now. It looks like most of the pieces are in place. It's too bad GIMP doesn't support 16 bit editing, color management, etc.
Krita looks like it's moving in the right direction. Perhaps it will eventually evolve to be a decent product for image editing.
I still wonder why Adobe doesn't target Linux users, since I can remember reading the results of a survey that Novell did indicating that Photoshop is the most requested application for Linux.
Heck, Adobe hasn't even released Flash 8 Player for Linux (they're going to skip Linux entirely for this version). That's pretty dumb if you ask me, since a lot of sites are already providing content that requires Flash 8 Player, and Linux users are sure to remember Adobe leaving them out.
If you need something that can browse raw files, you may also want to take a look at the FastStone Image Viewer.

It runs OK under Wine, provided you've got MS Truetype fonts installed. This is a must (otherwise, the menus will be virtually unreadable since the fonts don't seem to map right without MS fonts).
Another product to look at is Eric Hyman's Bibble. It's available for Mac, Linux and Windows; and does a pretty decent job (browsing folders with raw files, and raw conversion). I haven't tried the latest versions with Noise Ninja built in yet. But, most users reports I've seen indicate it works very well.

You're probably right. But, at least it's a step in the right direction.
I use Picasa every day under XP. It's great for quickly browsing images, and your edits are not applied to the original image. So, they're easy to "undo", similar to using layers in photoshop or other apps that support this kind of functionality.
Picasa's editing functions are primative compared to some of the more advanced editors But, for novice digicam users, it's a good product that lets you easily correct exposure problems using the Fill Light feature, along with the ability to correct color, enhance contrast, straigten crooked horizons and more ---without much of a learning curve.
BTW, Steve ran a story about the Linux release on the main page at http://www.steves-digicams.com this afternoon.

| So taking it for granted (correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not interested in google/ software at all) that the newly announced "linux version" is just the usual windows software wrapped up in wine (like Corel did it for CorelPhotopaint 9.0/ linux), what is the improvement for linux or linux users? |

I don't pretend to know Google's ulterior motives. For that matter, in the long run, MS may end up being the lesser of evils.
But, the software does run reasonablly well under Linux, and it offers some features you don't get with existing software designed specifically for Linux.
It's not a bad software package. I use it every day.

I don't have a problem with companies porting there apps like this.
Sure I prefer a native window app that matches my themes, but at least they are working to make sure it works on linux.
They even build the libs needed into the package. You don't have to configure wine. It ran without a hickup on my amd64 box. Wine was a pain to set up using the amd arch.
Not only that but google worked with wine on this. 100 + bug fixes. |

I was involved in this project somehow, so let me clarify the dust:
1) Also Google was built on the sholders of Linux and most of it's services are still run on Linux, it's contributions back to the community are minimal (small donations to Linux projects, Summer of Code).
2) Google holds back on porting any of their applications for Linux since years, because they are not the nice helpful guys from around the corner, as they love to present themselves to the public. Instead they are a stock exchange listed and share holder dependend corporation, with contracts and connections throughout the corporate landscape. No difference to MS here.
3) Google did not port Picasa to Linux. They evaluated that it would cost them too much money and time to do so (which is a big mistake, but that's what they thought), and finally hired the people from Codeweavers (the main and long time sponsor for the Wine project and developers of Crossover Office) to fix some libs and do a standalone package of Wine+crippled Picasa.
4) Google is not planning to port any of their applications to Linux. The next project is a Wine based crippled Google Earth, which will be ready soon.
Wine is a great project, because it enables people and organisations to move to the better operating system NOW, WHILE WAITING FOR IMPORTANT APPLICATIONS TO FOLLOW. This is also how Wine developers understand their mission. What Google did, is a bad move for Linux and Free and Open Source Software. It's what they always did: Abusing without seriously giving back.
Google does a good job on search technology, but - sorry for the harsh words - it is an evil, unhonest und unresponsible company.
Ah, almost forgot: There have been rumours about Google's own Linux distribution, "GooLinux". Well, you may want to support this project at http://goolinux.com.
