Titel: What CD to get?  BeitragVerfasst am: 08.06.2006, 14:14 Uhr

Do you people realize it's VERY unclear what iso to download for Kanotix?
I mean, how does one know what version to get, and why is there no explanation as to 32 bit and 64 bit, x86 and alpha and "Lite"?

I was planning to download and install, but I'm at a loss here. I want to do a harddisk install. Instead of explaining how to burn iso's, you might want to put a link to the iso there! And I'd like to know WHICH one to get.
This info is truly lacking in ALL your manuals/wiki and even in this forum.

What processor do you have; do you want a 32 bit or 64 bit install? Are you interested in upgrading or using a 'fixed install' version?

If I were starting today (32 bit), I'd download kanotix-2006-easter-rc4, dist-upgrade and then apt-get whatever additional packages I'd want.

I use Synaptic for package browsing but dist-upgrade in init 3. I use Kanoix-update-gui for kernel updates. (Look left - up for uniprocessor, kanotix for multiprocessor).

I installed a 2005-04 RC just over 5 months ago, dist-upgrade most days and have not broken the install to date. Got close with xorg7 upgrade but IRC got things working (from terminal via a fix-xorg script).

The 2005-04 Lite doesn't include OpenOffice (just koffice). I believe Easter-rc4 does not include OpenOffice. (This is easy to add later).

No one else can tell you what version to download because no one but you knows what type of computer you have. If you are confused about CPU architectures, a simple google search will present thousands of webpages with clarifying information. Here's a sample:
http://www.answers.com/topic/notable-cpu-architectures

Hidden away at www.kanotix.com, you'll find the following description: "Kanotix is assembled for 32 Bit i586 and for AMD 64". If you have a recent Intel or AMD processor, then you're in luck. Lite? Perhaps that means some of the bigger applications, like Open Office, aren't included for ease of downloading.

A link to the iso? It's carefully concealed on the left side of this webpage.

<polemic>
unlike debian we have only _TWO_ flavours, stale (aka stable 2005/04) and broken (aka preview easter rc4).
stale is - like stale bread - not so delicous.
broken - well you are able to fix it (with a little help from your friends).
</polemic>
it's YOUR decision!

Ciao Martin

P.S.: devil - you're going to reach 2000 posts - congratulations from berlin

Hi Devil28. What confused me at first (a while back) is that while I am logged in (in English) is that most of the text on the downloads page is in German. I see that has not changed. I did figure it out though. I think what confused me was that with some other distros you have to download a language specific version. It took me a short while to realize that Kanotix was a multi-language distro. It would be nice to have an English version of the downloads page that would display when a user is logged in and has chosen English.

Not that I am a language snob...although I do believe that one should read/write/speak the official language of the country one is liveing in! Mr. Green

Well, do we talk about the same page? http://kanotix.com/module-Downloads.html
Even if I turn my preferred language to German, it is still fully bi-lingual in German/English - every single line there is translated. And that's how it was from the very beginning of this site.
So, which web site are you talking about??

Additional we have added (months ago) a special block to the navigation on the left, where it lists all important releases with direct links for downloading (see "Preview" and "Stable Releases"). Those are always English ....
Again - are you sure you visited http://kanotix.com ??

Greetings,
Chris

Hi Guys. Yes Slam, I clicked on the link at the Downloads link at the left. Yes everything IS translated...but to a non German speaker, it looks like there is more German text than English. Sorry, I didn't intend to ruffle any feathers! It may not be clear to persons like the original poster what link (either on the laft or the download page) is correct for him. Yes I noticed the links at the left, but they were not there when I originally downloaded Kanotix 2005-03. Sounds like the original poster is (or was) not aware that the 32bit/64bit refers to the processor in the machine he wants to install on. I know that lite means that not all the apps are present that are there in the normal 32bit and 64 bit release, but that may not be clear to a newbie either (I am still somewhat of a newbie about Linux myself, but I am trying to learn) I guess I am saying a little more explanation for newbies would be a good thing. I did not understand what th RC releases were (like many other things!) until I had read the forums here.

Again, I am sorry if I ruffled any feathers!

Well I must agree with iemand here. Then don't hide it away! Link to that link you googled up. Write down that Lite means what it means. Tell the user what ISO is right for what.

I, for one, was surprised to find that at boot, the live-cd gives me a list of Options, yet no explanation as to which one to pick.
I remember I had it standing on that screen almost an hour, before I finally found out why I could start with ACPI on DMA on APIC off, and I still wasn't sure it was the best option. That's pretty bad, every other live-cd I know I did not have this with. It could at least say what is the right one for most users.

Likewise, with the ISO to download, you can at least say something like:
"Most users will want THIS one."

I think he/she does know, but isn't that something the CD can detect?
Also, the "Preview" iso download link on the left suddenly does NOT give a choice between 32/64 or Lite. So then what? I see what he/she means with it being confusing.

meow,
if the preview link says nothing on 32/64 bit, then its 32 bit. there is no 64 bit preview atm.

Been learning about the internet since 1992.
I was hopelessly lost for the first few years.
Finally got a clue: You have to read what is presented, and meditate on it.

All tech sites seem to have this problem. If they tell you too much, people
think it's too complicated. If they try to simplify then many someones fail
to understand.

I think the web pages are well done and load fast.
There is no substitute for reading before clicking.
And we all do it too often. Smilie

Richard.

Thanks Richard, golden words - really appreciate them.

Hey, this is no kindergarten, we are an "adult" site here. Winken

This is the web site about a revolutionary new operating system for your computer. So, if you want to use this shiny operating system, please take your time and read up at least the FAQ we have carefully prepared for you. If anything remains unclear, please ask in the forums or in the IRC. THEN start to download your new operating system and happily work with it.

If I would search the internet for anything else, I would follow the same procedure. I educate my children the same way. Clicking around without reading and thinking might be great fun and a nice learning experience, but always at the risk of breaking things and doing wrong. Grown up people are aware of that. They hopefully still play, but they don't blaim others if it gets wrong. Smilie

And yes, we all welcome beginners very much here. We are striving hard to assist them - but we expect them to think, too. For life-long clicking without any thinking or understanding involved, another - well known - operating system is definitely the better choice.

Greetings,
Chris

Then it wouldn't hurt to explain
What a md5 is... how to burn etc. etc.

What might seem obvious to us and not need any explanation is ... well sometimes difficult for a noobie.
Richard does have a good point but also many people learn by download, install and play then start reading the docs.

Ok, whoever has time and passion to do it, please write a nice wording for the (now missing) description at the download section. Please also for the preview release. You can post it here, I will add it then.
Hope this solves the possible confusion.
Greetings,
Chris

How to Download Kanotix
Before you download, here is the manual (en), its work in progress http://linux.kopporama.de/en/kanotix_manual.html
This manual also includes how to burn the CD and how to install.
http://linux.kopporama.de/en/km_burn.html
Download the .md5 file which will verify the media is not corrupt, in linux k3b does this autopmatically in windows several utilities exist.
The firefox md5 extension for windows is available with instructions here: http://mdhashtool.mozdev.org/installation.html

For first time downloaders there are several files here.
Those with 32 bit processors can choose the Full version with OpenOfffice or a lighter version, Kanotix light.
Those with 64 bit processors can choose any of the above. You should check the forum for the current limits of Kanotix 64 bit but the main difference is the use of external plugins for Mozilla/Firefox (like flash) and codecs. If you are a real noobie then the 32 bit edition will work for everyone with the least and usually no configuration on your part)

All CD images (.iso) both are German and English .. you will be given an opportunity to change this when the system boots from CD.
Users of other languages can change languages after install, keyboard support is easily changed once booted.

Please follow the manual and burn at half of full speed for your CD burner.. you will be using the CD extensively and the files are compressed so the more robust the burn the better.

When you burn you will be able to just boot with the CD in the primary CD/DVD drive and you should be given a menu. Choose your preferred language.
Most users will be fine with the first two option but you can use the function keys to set the resolution during booting....
If the boot hangs then you can always try the options with nodma and noacpi etc. but most users will not need these.
Once it boots be patient, its running from the CD and eventually you will get a Konqueror webpage which if your network settings are correctly detected and you don't have wireless encryption should connect you direct to this website by pressing the kanotix shortcut.
If you cannot connect by wireless the kanotix menu (fish icon) will allow you to set up your connection under the network tools.
Once you have an internet connection you are free to connect to the forum here and also #kanotix IRC channel for help. (on the desktop)

Have fun....

That is your choice. Smilie
I've been using the 2.6.16.20-slh-up-1 for a couple of weeks and it seems solid to me.

It probably wasn't necessary, but I felt that it probably contains a few bugfixes that might be useful to my situation. And since I dist-upgrade fairly often it seemed the thing to do.
