Kano64 2005-04 on Fuitsu A3040(Turion)

I have seen these problems being discussed in the forums,
but it is not always easy to find the correct fixes...

Re-tried a dist-upgrade: a few here are a few of the problems
that came up:

udev: where do I get a 64-bit kernel >= 2.16.15 (? 2.6.16.19-slh64-smp-1 ?)
NTFS: mount error on hda2 (?error code 96)
CUPS: segfault
Synaptic (?): no touchpad (touchpad frozen, keyboard ok)
errors in LAN config. (worked in 05-04)
...
Any pointers on how to dist-upgrade Kano64 are welcome (including: stay with 05-04 Winken )

I have been using 64-bit for quite awhile

I recommend apt-get upgrade to your heart's content

but dist-upgrade will probably break your install, as I am pretty certain h2 scripts to fix xorg, etc. will not work on 64-bit

"dist-upgrade" is strongly recommended in favour of a mere "upgrade", X.org 7.0 post install procedures as usual; concerning the udev ./ , kernel issue I'd recommend a look to the left.

Update:

I did a "dist-upgrade" of Kanotix64 05-04 using h2's script: http://techpatterns.com/forums/about736.html, in spite of the warning that it would not work for the 64-bit distro. I simply switched to yesterday's 2.6.17 64-bit kernel (did it just jump to 20?), and it is working great so-far! Thank you!

ignorance is bliss Winken

the h2 scripts work fine on the 2005-4 64, it only requires one modification, the kernel wget has to be changed to the 64 bit version to your left on this page. I'll add a 64 bit detection so that it automatically gets the latest 64 bit kernel when I get around to it.

If you've never upgraded the install, you'll probably need to loop through dist-upgrade install -f options several times before everything is installed.

Yes: no obvious apt-get errors after one "dist-upgrade install -f" loop, or two dist-upgrades.

the du-fixes-h2.sh script is now udated to support 64 bit kano versions, both for new kernel install and version testing.

I tested it on a vanilla 2005-4 64 install, and found that no install -f option was required, just 2 dist-upgrades. I'll test it again today to see if I can see where the usb stick mounting error comes in, if it reproduces. Of course, it might get fixed by tomorrow's du, hard to say with 64 bit sid.

The hal/dbus stuff has been updated, sid no longer requires most of those fixes, except for installing dbus and purging dbus-1, and in fact, you can't run those old fixes that the factoid on irc says because of new dependencies on hal/dbus that do not permit them to be uninstalled any more until upgrade to dbus occurs.

Also, 2.6.14 kernel will not work with new hal so script will not allow upgrade until new kernel is installed.

Your results may vary.

The 64 bit usb stick mounting bug, I'm not sure if it's just a hal/udev type bug in 64 bit sid, or if it was caused by the upgrade process.

Usb stick is recognized, icon appears on desktop, with the same bug other people are reporting, the kde thing, where all the icons appear at once, but then the system can't read the usb stick, says that /dev/sdd1 needs to be set in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab.

I tried upgrading a few non 64 bit installs and none of them showed this error.

So as usual, upgrade 64 bit at your own risk.

As of yesterday, doing a du on 64 bit 2005-4 vanilla will upgrade about 850 packages, and install about 150 new ones, for a total of over 1000 packages. It's about 600 mB for all of it to download.

But it does work, except for the usb stick thing. Nvidia driver installs fine too.
