I want to install another Kanotix on a spare hard drive, and then replace KDE with Gnome, using Synaptic. I'd like to try the Kanotix Gnome!

What is the best (easisest!) way of uninstalling KDE, please? I would imagine that only having Gnome is better than keeping KDE as well.

I can't find the answer in the archives.

Many thanks for any help.

Keith,

I don,t think you need to remove KDE to run Gnome in fact I wouldn,t. If you just install the new version of Kanotix on your other drive then apt-get install gnome-desktop-environment it should give you most of a working version of Gnome. You can then set Gnome as the default desktop at boot time. Whatever you do don,t use synaptic. When Gnome is working OK try removing KDE with apt, see what intends to remove if it looks OK give it a shot, should work ok.

there is no need to remove kde. Gome can be activated fom within the login-menu. Session-type Gnome does it. and you can set it as default for the next time.

I think one of the devs or helpers (slam) is in the process of creating a Kanotix gnome.

Gnome is a nasty beast - I am working on a good solution for Kanotix since months. Not just that clean and good looking configuration is not easy, there are bigger problems:

Unfortunately the Debian head maintainers for Gnome are far more interested in Ubuntu than in clean Gnome in Debian Sid. They simply throw the packages into the repository as they come from developers, and don't take much care for a clean and trouble-free upgrade. Therefore Gnome in Sid often presents itself with conflicting versions or unresolved dependencies. If you finally pick a lucky day where everything is the same version and nothing is missing - be assured it's exactly that day where Python runs into conflicts ....

So, if you are patient you can install Gnome on Kanotix - but then keep it as it is and better don't upgrade any more. You should also take care for already having installed all applications you might need, as they are not always installable later on without upgrading. There is no need to remove KDE before (just if you need the space), but you should definitely de-activate KDM and use GDM instead, which works better together with Gnome.

After all the time I spent with Gnome I definitely would not recommend it any more. It might be a comfortable Desktop for static distributions that don't change or upgrade much after hd-install, also for a live-cd - but not for Debian Sid/Kanotix.

Greetings,
Chris

Without wishing to contradict slam- i installed gnome on an older kanotix a while back, just to experiment, and i cant say i ever had any big problems with upgrading- just problems with the fact that gnome is horrid Winken

Thanks to all for your replies and help.

The reason I asked about uninstalling KDE, is that in the past, I have tried having both KDE and Gnome installed in SUSE and Mandriva.

In both, the KDE desktop looked terrible as it had the Gnome desktop icons (showing as folders) scattered all over it. The same with KDE icons on the Gnome desktop. So I abandoned trying to have both installed.

There seems to be mixed reaction to the Gnome desktop! Having read your replies, I will have a good, long, think before going to the trouble of downloading the Gnome packages - especially as I am on capped broadband and it would take up a large part of my monthly allowance!

The Kanotix KDE is so good, I thought the Kanotix Gnome might be something special. Smilie

Thanks again for your help.

Cheers

Keith

Go for xfce, keith, if you're looking for an alternative.

Suse wanted to make kde looks like gnome and vs.
RedHat/mandirva wanted gnome to look gnome like kde and xfce.

Gnome much is not documented, niether in source nor in binarys. not so with kde. With each version, the Documentation is getting better. Same with that what thy have changed.

I have tried xfce, but didn't really "get to grips" with it. From my Libranet days, I liked IceWM the best of the alternatives to Gnome or KDE.

I just wanted to try the Kanotix Gnome, to see how it compared with other distros' Gnomes. In my humble (newbie) opinion, and I am not starting a desktop war, KDE is getting just a bit bloated and OTT.

Thanks again for all your help. What an excellent forum this is. If only there was a mailinglist!!

Cheers

Keith
