How do I get HPLIP to startup in Kanotix (2006-easter-rc4)?

In the past, all I've needed to do was run rcconf as root, scroll down to HPLIP, check the box for it and select OK. It would then start up when I rebooted each time.

That doesn't work in 2006-easter-rc4.

When I reboot, it doesn't start, and if you run rcconf again, the box for HPLIP is no longer checked (as if something is overwriting whatever it's supposed to be doing for the services that startup).

Try

unfreeze-rc.d
rcconf
freeze-rc.d

or from control center > kanotix > boot

unfreeze first !

Thanks. I didn't even realize there was a separate boot menu for Kanotix in Control Panel (or that there was a way to freeze/unfreeze the services started). lol I'm not very Linux literate.

In the past, I'd tried to figure out how to use KSysv to do it (without success), before someone suggested using rcconf. But, I didn't spend much time trying to figure it out.

But, apparently, the services weren't frozen in previous Kanotix 2005 versions like they are in this RC (or at least the ones I've tried in the past).

That worked fine (unfreeze, move HPLIP from disabled to enabled in the boot tab), freeze them again with the tick box for it. HPLIP is starting up now (I just tested it and it's working fine now).

Thanks.

Is there a reaon that you'd want to leave services that startup frozen?

Is that just a safeguard to prevent something you install from turning on services you may not want started that eat up resources or something?

I haven't seen that before.

When you update many services would start that are currently inactive but preinstalled on cd. Therefore this prevents em from starting. This was introduced with 2005-04.

Thanks Kano.!

Some distros I've tried leave HPLIP started by default (for example SimplyMEPIS). But, I guess if you don't have an HP printer, it's a waste of resources to leave it enabled by default. Lachen

I like having it in the distro though. The HPLIP toolbox lets me check ink levels, align heads, etc. So, it gives you the same kind of functionliaty you get with Windows with my printer.

I can remember having some issues with my printer not working in some of the earlier Kanotix 2005 Release Candidates I tried (but, you got it working in later Release Candidates). You must have worked hard to sort out the issues getting newer HPLIP versions and printer drivers supported (from what I can remember reading about it, it was a pretty big deal to make some changes to get them supported with some distros).

You never know, I may end up using Linux as my primary desktop yet (although there have been "show stoppers" in the past for a Linux newbie like me, it looks like a lot of progress is being made).

So, thanks for the hard work.
