really wanna try out kanotix, but the live cd freezes at startup. it gets to "autoconfiguring devices" and just hangs. no cd or disc activity. sometimes it shows the little penguin dancing around, taunting me, as if to say, "watch me dance all day, sucker. i ain't loadin'."

i've tried pretty much every cheatcode and screen resolution. "failsafe" mode, too. nothing worked. unplugged all devices, etc. no idea what it is. the knoppix live cd works fine through "autoconfiguring devices."

it's an nec ll900 laptop (a japanese-made computer; i'm in japan; yes, i tried the japanese version of kanotix). 1.73m pentium m, ati radeon 200m video, toshiba hard drive. the computer's only about a year old.

any help?

did you burn the cd with Disk At Once mode in whatever you used to burn it with? If not, reburn the cd and try again, using quality media and a slow burning speed, with DAO mode burning.

could that really be it? yeah, i used disc-at-once. actually, i tried kanotix months ago on a different disc and had the same problem. if that's the only possibility, i guess i'll be buying some more cds. it's just that about half the live cds i try don't work and half do (even after being burned more than once), so i have a feeling it's not a problem with the disc itself.

Yes, it could be the problem, bad burns are the number one problem.

There's other cheatcodes you can try: acpi=off or something like, or is it noacpi

I can't remember which, that will sometimes make the install go too.

Yea, does the "ACPI off - DMA off" grub menu selection work?

hmm... well, i ran checksums on the kanotix cd and yeah, i got 2 errors. i'm just surprised it would be something so simple and that it happened on two different discs with kanotix where as knoppix and ubuntu have worked on more than one disc each. weird...

kanotix uses an extremely high compression on its isos, it's not like other distros, this throws new users off all the time because they don't have the same issues with other distros.

However, some errors are so subtle that they will not show up with md5 checksums or testcd cheatcode, those are usually caused by:

1. Not burning in DAO mode. DAO is not default in most burners
2. Using cheap cds
3. burning them too fast, better to burn kanotix cds at 8x or so
4. In your case, I suspect a bad or weak burner as well.

I too, have had the Easter RC4 freeze at the gui before the little eggs appear & do their thing, & have to hit reset button to start over. The "ACPI off - DMA off" grub selection didn't seem to make a difference. I used K3b to burn & verify data with no errors detected, but I probably had the speed [auto-detect] too high. During HD installation, it's frozen at 65% or so more than once. As an experiment I moved my mouse right at that point & it went past & installed ok, but I don't know if that made the difference.
