Titel: Has anyone installed Digikam 0.9.0 Beta, and does it work?  BeitragVerfasst am: 07.09.2006, 01:37 Uhr

I installed the lastest digikam 0.9 beta from debian experimental today using Synaptic by forcing the newer version. Ditto for the new digikam plugins.

I tried it using Kanotix 2006-easter-rc4 (note that this is a relatively vanilla install and I have not updated packages using H2's script).

After a succesful install of beta versions of digikam and digikamplugins, they are showing up in Synaptic as digikam 1:0.9-beta1-rc1-1 (experimental)
and
digikamplugins 0.9-beta1-2 (experimental)

But, it doesn't appear to actually open and render raw files, even though they've got a flash presentations demonstrating working with them. You'll see links to them from this page:

http://www.digikam.org/?q=node/130

I've tried raw files from a Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D, Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D, Canon EOS-1D Mark II and Nikon D2x.

Same problem with all of them. The built in browser shows the the thumbnails OK (which makes sense, due to a small thumbnail built into them), EXIF data shows up (which is an improvement over the older version with some camera models).

But, when you try to display or edit a raw file, a blank screen comes up (you can still see EXIF OK though).

JPEG and TIFF images display OK. But, not raw files from cameras I've tried so far, even though they worked fine in digikam 0.8.2-2

I find it hard to belive that they would miss something that important, even though they apparently made a lot of changes and went to 16 bit editing (including conversion of the plugins to 16 bit).

They even show a link to the new version working with a raw file from one the same cameras I'm trying to convert images from (a Konica Minolta 5D) on this page:

http://www.digikam.org/?q=node/122

So, I'm wondering if anyone else has managed to get it working from the packages in debian experimental.

I've got several hundred raw files taken at a recent anniversary party that I was planning on trying to use Linux versus Windows XP to process to see if I could adjust my workflow, and I wanted to see if the new digikam may be a good way to go.

But, so far, it doesn't appear to actually work with raw files that worked fine in the older digikam version. But, the older version is virtually unusable because of posterization (thanks to being limited to 8 bit editing). So, the newer version looked like it may be an option now that they've converted to 16 bit editing (and allow a much faster workflow compared to trying to use UFRaw, etc.).

Before I start reporting bugs, I want to see if it could be someting I'm doing wrong (i.e., does the package included in debian experimental for this software actually work, or is something wrong with it).

IF someone has installed the new digikam beta and could see if it can actually view and edit a raw file, I'd appreciate it. Then, I'll know if it's something I did wrong with the installation.

If you don't have a raw file you can test with, dyxum.com has a couple of 7D raw files in their download section. Here is a link to one (it's been zipped, but there is only one .mrw file in it).

http://www.dyxum.com/downloads/sampleImages/7D-GM_Mini.zip

Note that when importing an image from a 7D, you'll need to make sure .mrw (used by Minolta raw files) is included as one of the file extensions to look for (it's not there by default).

If someone got it working by compiling from source (versus using the packages for digikam and digikamplugins in debian experimental), please let me know what I'd need to do in order to get it working that way.

Thanks in advance.

I am happy to report that digiKam 0.9.0 Beta 1 is working fine, including conversion and rendering of raw files in Kanotix 2006-1-RC1, after installing the packages available in Debian Experimental for digiKam and digikamplugins via Synaptic (by using the "force version" menu option).

It appears to default to 8 bit editing when opening a 16 bit file from what I can tell. But, once you select 16 bit mode, it makes a huge improvement in the quality of the edits (far less posterization than I saw in digiKam 0.8.2).

It's got a few remaning issues from what I can tell from my limited tests so far. For example, it does not have an option to use the camera's as shot white balance from what I can tell, which may be a show stopper for many photographers. But, it appears to be making progress and I'll try to work with it and send some feedback to the developers.

More choices like this are needed in order for Linux to become more popular for Desktop use, and it's nice to see applications that are trying to address some of the shortcomings in image editors available for LInux.
