Titel: FileZilla beta now available as a deb in apt  BeitragVerfasst am: 29.10.2006, 19:14 Uhr

The years of waiting are now over, last week, finally, Filezilla 3 beta is now in debian sid.

apt-get install filezilla

Linux has needed a full featured ftp client for years, and now it's here. I've been using the alpha stuff for a year, nightly builds, but now finally I can get it through apt should I so choose.

Filezilla includes features that should be standard, but which for some reason no gui ftp client I ever checked on Linux ever included, things like being able to set auto detection of file transfer type, ascii/binary, user adjustable list of ascii file types, and much more.

Nice going botg, he deserves a big hand for going out of his way to make filezilla linux easy to maintain and build for distro packagers, especially debian packagers. (unlike certain open source browser companies I could mention but won't....). Unlike that company, he includes the build options to bypass the autoupdating features, so no code hacking is required to do that.

I too am very glad to see FileZilla ported to Linux.

When I was a Windows user I used FZ all the time, so much so I donated some money to the author.

Seem to be a nice app with regards to functionality but it doesn't score too well on the interface. Not only is it difficult to look at, the layout is somewhat convoluted. Gftp for example has a much cleaner layout. Great to have a choice tho!

The beta doesn't have all the configuration options for the interface yet, which let you set which windows etc you want to display, and remember layout/sizes etc. Believe me, once you get used to this, if you do a lot of ftping, gftp is pretty much unuseable unless you only do super basic ftp stuff. Plus gftp doesn't support many of the advanced functional things in filezilla.

I actually used filezilla 2 for years without using that 4 pane interface, then suddenly one day a few months ago I started using it because of some early alpha filezilla bugs, and then suddenly navigating through complicated directory structures became an instant breeze.

I felt slightly silly for having used it so long without even learning about that part, old habit I guess from ws_ftp95/LE days, which by the way is not unlike gftp in terms of simple interface.

To me, you can throw pretty much all other linux ftp clients into one pile, since they pretty much all have one limitation or another, and none have the user settings for auto/binary/ascii transfer type, unless one finally added it in the last 6 months. I was actually amazed to find that there was no fully functional gui ftp client on linux when I first started using it, that was a massive oversight, not sure how that came about, but it was one reason I waited to switch for a few months.

There wasn't even something that duplicated the near antique functionality of ws_ftp LE or 95 fully. As botg fills out the rest of the features, this situation will finally be resolved. It's like Linux ftp client functionality stopped somewhere around 10 years ago, minus some standard features from back then, not one I tried was even remotely close in features to even the most barebones windows ftp client.

Well, 2 Cents:

1) Linux people don't use ftp that often. They prefer secure file transfer via ssh+rsync. That's why GUI ftp-clients are not very well developed.

2) I don't miss any feature when using either Konqueror (configuration details are somehow hidden, though), but even better mc, which let's me do all my daily stuff between servers remotely and locally in an extra secure session without X or KDE involved.

Greetings,
Chris

slam, that definitely helps explain the mystery. Still have to say I prefer a good gui client though, just fits with a certain way of working much more easily, and with sftp security isn't really an issue. Not sure if filezilla has sftp working, I know it's on the to do list.

FTPS: A TLS extension for standard FTP
SFTP: A SSH subsystem simulating FTP on top of the SSH protocol

Please be careful, just the 2nd one is seriously secure.

Greetings,
Chris

Well sftp is the only thing I ever use not only because of security but I already have ssh running - why even bother opening up another port? I tested that functionality immediately with filezilla and it did that just fine (just use port 22).

Yes, botg is rolling right along, sftp was not working a while ago, now it is. Also coming is file sychronization, although personally I will never trust automatic up or downloading from one box to another, my stuff is too fluid for that, experiments on local machine I don't want uploaded, etc until I actually feel it's ready for prime time.

I believe however that sftp is significantly slower because of the added security than ftp, but don't quote me on that, I usually don't use it, although I guess I should.

Hopefully now that more real users are running filezilla 3 botg will finish up some of the user interface stuff, configuration stickiness etc.

I'll have to learn more about rsynch and ssh but at the moment I'm pretty maxed out in terms of learning more new stuff.
