I used Suse for a few years 96 - 02, I think it was one of the best Linux distros until bought out by Novell, who lets face it, as a company have a crap track record. Their motives are purely financial they are not the slightest interested in open source or free software just making money.

Novell bought Suse in 2004. Since then, they've put YaST2 under the GPL, released openSUSE, and told everyone in their company run Suse (aka "eating your own dogfood"). All of that would indicate that they do care about open source software.

As far as their rather startling "dance with the devil" goes, we'll have to wait and see.

I haven't. I didn't realize until the installing I was suppose to right down the IP address of the mirrors I wanted to use and manually enter them.

Yet people still complain about Debian's installers.

I gave up after that. I started with Suse and disliked it since. I was just curious to see what it looked like.

The more I think about this Novell/Microsoft deal, the more it pisses me off. It's not just "who" Novell's dealing with -- hello, don't they remember that Microsoft practically invented the term "FUD"? -- it's this whole patent cross-licensing/indemification thing. As GrokLaw says, this implies Microsoft could start to bring lawsuits against Linux distros for patent violations (except for Novell, of course). It also sounds like it's against the GPL.

(I hope you Europeans don't let your government implement software patents. It's a bad idea.)

Like many of you I have some spare partitions on my computer which I use to play around with other distros. I just got though installing openSUSE 10.1, updating X.org and KDE to current using their experimental repos, and had Beryl working with the new nvidia drivers. Pretty good stuff.

(Since they came out with openSUSE, they've made complete installation media available, so there's no need to futz around with an FTP install anymore.)

There's a lot to like about Suse -- it's stable, although you can update it with experimental software; Suse includes some excellent self-produced documentation (if you buy it, you get a printed copy); the artwork's nice; you can stick with YaST/Zen-updater, or install a 3rd-party package manager; etc.

Although this agreement covers Novell's commercial Linux offerings and not specifically openSuse, there are already calls to boycott Novell. So, now what?

and yes, I've successfully done the net/ftp install, although it was a pain:

but as noted, it's not necessary any longer with open suse, that was something you needed to do to run the latest suse release version before they created opensuse.

Hello!

http://www.linspire.com/linspire_letter ... .php?id=36
Zitat:

You see, part of the agreement extends IP protection for Novell's Linux products. This is the part of the announcement that concerns me and perhaps contained Microsoft's hidden agenda. This part of their agreement, by its very nature, suggests two things: 1) that Microsoft HAS IP in open source Linux, and 2) that Microsoft should be paid a licensing fee for this IP. I don't think the rest of the world agrees with these points, or that they've ever been proven in any court. By making such assertions, and now with Novell as their poster child for these claims, Microsoft is in a position to either try to kill open source Linux with exorbitant fees, or to make sure they share in its success, should they prove unable to kill it.

Since transparently investing in SCO, Microsoft has wanted to find ways to use 3rd parties to thwart open source and Linux. I honestly believe Microsoft would love to point their IP guns directly at Linux and blow it out of the water, but that would appear too heavy handed, so they need to have one willing partner to set a price and precedence on that IP. And yesterday, Microsoft announced that partner. Because of their large patent portfolio, Novell was the perfect choice. If Microsoft is going to let the "first guy" off the hook, Novell is a good choice. I'm confident that, just like with the SCO matter, when you follow the money, not only will you see a lot flowing from Novell to Microsoft to pay for the IP, but you'll also find lots flowing from Microsoft to Novell, to off set the IP fees, basically paying Novell to be Microsoft's poster child for IP payments.

However, with SCO, their futile scare tactic attempt to stymie the natural momentum of Linux and Open Source software did nothing but provide editorial content for the industry trades, bringing even more attention to the Linux option. Yes, it worried some at first, but when the dust settled, there was nothing there, leaving Linux more popular than ever. I believe the same will happen in this instance. Those of us who have been following, or are specifically involved with Linux and open source software, are keenly aware that it's an unstoppable movement that continues to weave its way into the fabric of technology in every industry. Everything that is Linux and open source is different from the traditional software business models and Microsoft and Oracle are being forced to make strategic moves and draw alliances in the Linux space for fear of missing on this opportunity or losing more customers. As I look at Microsoft's approach towards open source and Linux, I'm reminded of the famous words of Ghandi: “First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.” While Microsoft previously ignored and laughed at open source publicly, they're not laughing any more. This is just another futile effort in their attempts to fight open source, which signals open source is one step closer to winning, which I'm confident it will do.

Cheers, Roman

First of all, I like the Suse /Novell approach since the Linux comminuty needs a real headder in order to promote Linux to the world, I mean the "windows" world...And there is no other name bigger than Novell, is there...

Instead of bashing it like hobby freaks one should copycat the format in order to get Linux ahead of Windows. Still to this day too many using Linux are wishing that Bill would become their friend one day as it seems the only way for a programmer to no longer having to be a geek?!

Don't know. It's all about $pice, and you might be right, it's not just about getting market share from Red Hat, it might be the dream of using the Microsoft marketing machine to open totally new markets for Novell's SuSE.

Novell was once a big shot and now was dwarfed by Bill! (Who isn't) At first they as new underdog wanted to be idealistic and start a comeback thru Linux. A noble idea, but then back in the game the capitalist notion breaks thru and the spirit of Linux is getting sold out Traurig See, all want to be like Bill, all programmers, so it is a human issue and not that Linux is the best OS out there and hence needs no pitting from MS.

Real Linux ppl have a spine and say we have gone so far that now even MS takes a serious note of us, and we will have our own break-through without the valued and worshipped shareholder's dream of making merely another buck with it.. (See IBM's OS/2)

As if MS would tolerate that Linux is getting big thru their marketing machine, lol This might be the folly they sell to Novell/Suse Smilie

The idea behind it is so obvious: They adapt to Linux like to formerly Real Player and then start their own multimedia player. All this aims that users no longer can say Linux is ignored and thus gets more attention ..

Now users will say, that MS is reaching out to Linux and thus it is degraded in the OS world as mere plugin for the future success of MS. Smart move but a rather wicked one 2..

Therefore Linux must learn to play the marketing game instead of having silly wannabe programmers preaching that Linux is so much better but are failing to win the regular user of the internet for it!!!!

This is achieved by understanding the needs of the Linux user who does not start from scratch as most programmers did, but that they come already from MS: Hence they are used to such patterns. Right now these newbies are forced by coldhearted "linux" B@tches" to worship the programmer instead of being welcomed as a convert to learn true computing in their spare time...

Look at the roots of Linux how it began: Linus had such an openminded view and ppl started joining him creating this OS. But too many next-generation Linux prophets rather are all but seeking to catch up with their MS geeks in rivalry instead of focusing on the user who must be won to begin with in order to spread a great product and not onself as Bill does in my humble view (by having a monopoly established carelessly)

In other simple words MS is not big, Linux just too small and this can be easily fixed if the users of Linux would understand that Bill is not the role model of promoting a garage-days project into an global empire.. This is not how it works, since it leaves the joy of the (paying) user out in the long run.....

Hence win ppl to drop entirely MS from their harddrives and go all the way with Linux, then you have done your good deed of the day, pal! Smilie

..linux is grown up.

There is no better way to keep development costs as cheap as it is shown by the linux community.
And i am sure, that M$ will take over a lot of strategies and maybe a lot of technical know-how from
various linux distributions for their further development of their next Releases.
They should be interested in coorporating with such a Distribution as Suse.

On the other hand, Novell has 2 (!) Distributions: "Open Suse" and "Suse Linux".
"Suse" has to reach a windowish ability to hold this strong position and to get money out of
a free source... Traurig
"Open Suse" is a "suse look-a-like",- but without any of the hard-to-get drivers.
And there are no interests shown by Novell in making good deals to get some needed driver for an open-source distribution.
What a pity..

The picture above is excatly what i foresee, related to Suse.
Therefore, i dont waste my time in installing
Suse as M$2008 Pre-release wich will need a financial subvention before making a kernel-update..

Maybe it wont be Suse that reforms to M$, but M$ that changes to Linux:
I can also imagine that the kernel386.exe will rename to vmlinuz386.exe.

Greets,
XOn

Here is a interesting article on the subject. It suggests a
possible threat to the Linux community via patents.
