Titel: Software Suspend & Kanotix?  BeitragVerfasst am: 28.11.2006, 17:37 Uhr

Hi, has anyone got any useful hints or tips I can use on how to get software supend working in Kanotix?

Has anyone had any experience of this? Has anyone got any insight on how well it works?

As far as I can tell Kanotix has all of the parts needed to get Software Suspend working. I am not asking for exact instructions or any hand holding, however perhaps if there is a link to a guide - or a forum post describing how to enable this feature I would be very grateful.

Any tips or infor that anyone can offer would be very much appreciated.

Hi, I found this link here, but it's in German:

http://kanotix.com/index.php?module=pnW ... g=Suspend2

Could anyone possibly be kind enough to offer an English translation of this?

Suspend in Linux is still quite tricky.
the basics are simple, and putting a machine INTO suspend usually is no problem.
However, getting it out of it....

The document you refered to is about hibernate; so suspend to disk.
I'm guessing you are actually interested in suspend to RAM?

The basics are easy: make sure you have the acpi and acpid packages installed.

To put your machine in suspend, do, as root on a commandline: "echo mem > /sys/power/state"
This will work!
But I don't know if you can get your machine out of it again.

And if it wont work will I be able to rescue my system?

I didn't know Linux could do proper suspend to ram? I thought that Suspend2 was purely software suspend?

When I used Gentoo it wasn't that simple at all. I had to specify in the kernel a location on my drive for my saved data (which was my swap file).

Also I read somewhere that I needed to pass some options to grub - but I never really figured it out properly because I never really liked Gentoo that much - and preferred a pure Debian distro instead.

AFAIK suspend2 is actually meant for suspend to disk.
but of course you will be able to rescue your system, but you will have to reboot for it.

What you write about Gentoo is basically still true, but that is suspend to disk.
The options you refer to are probably the "resume=/dev/hd#" you need in your grub, so that it can find the hibernation file.
And I don't know if you ever used a stopwatch here, but the more RAM you have, the more time it takes to write it all to disk, and to read it back. Usually just shutting a system down and booting it again is faster.

Well isn't the point of it to save time? If I put it another way... my laptop (which I just bought very recently) came with Windows XP installed. I don't generally use Windows - and haven't for some time on my desktop PC. I also don't have much previous experience with laptops.

However when I close the lid on my laptop in Windows XP, it goes into a really quite useful suspend mode - which does significantly enhance the amount of time (and hence save on energy) that it takes to start my laptop.

What in Linux is the closest and most reliable match to this?

Also you indicated that suspend to RAM might be 'difficult to get out of'. I took it that you were implying that my computer might enter an irrecoverable state? So if I use the suspend to RAM command that you listed above and it doesn't work properly, to get out of it I do what exactly? Just press the power button on my laptop to force it to switch off and then reboot? Is that all? Are you certain no other harm is likely to come of it?

I have 1GB of RAM - and I tried software suspend in Ubuntu. It worked kind of OK (it was certainly quick enough) but my laptop keyboard wasn't recognised, which meant I had to plug in a USB keyboard and then reboot. Not very practical I guess - but I wondered if there might possibly be a way around this...

with powersave/kpowersave, as long as mobo supports it, both suspend to ram and suspend to disk work flawlessly.

However, if the hardware doesn't support it, it doesn't work at all from what I can see. So on most newer laptops it works great.

The worst thing that can happen is that you can not reboot, it makes you crazy, you run out in the street, a car hits you and you're dead.

But seriously: the worst I ever saw was with a Dell laptop that wouldn't shutdown anymore. It needed to be reset by removing the battery, booted again, and that was it.

Just try it.
If you want to know more, go to http://www.linux-laptop.net/ and see if someone already got it working on the same type of machine.
