K ADSL Watch is a universal ADSL monitor for KDE 2 and KDE 3, and can be used with the AVM DSL/ISDN-Controller and the CAPI4Linux driver. K ADSL Watch is an "open source" program: the complete source code is available under the GNU Public License. The program is based on the ISDN monitor "kimon", written by Markus Dahlweid for I4L and the HiSax driver. K ADSL Watch can be used in all Linux distributions.
Features of K ADSL Watch include:
If you also want to monitor the AVM DSL/ISDN-Controller's ISDN operation, K ISDN Watch is available from AVM's FTP server:
ftp://ftp.avm.de/tools/k_isdn_watch.linux
Both utilities can be used simultaneously. For further information on K ISDN Watch, see the documents in the FTP directory.
K ADSL Watch is based on the CAPI 2.0 standard interface. The program uses the "capi_manufacturer" call defined in CAPI 2.0 to display certain AVM-specific information about the DSL/ISDN-Controller status. For this reason, K ADSL Watch works only with the AVM DSL/ISDN-Controller.
NOTE: In SUSE 8.2 or higher K ADSL Watch is included on the SUSE installation CDs. You may install the ADSL monitor easily through YaST (Install and Remove Software).
ATTENTION: Before installing K ADSL Watch remove any previous version and make sure to that the development environment packets for X, QT and KDE are present for compilation. Error messages like the following indicate that files or directories required by the system are missing: "In the prefix you've chosen, are no KDE headers installed. This will fail. So, check this please and use another prefix!"Error messages like the following one indicate that files or directories are missing: "In the prefix you've chosen are no KDE headers installed. This will fail. So, check this please and use another prefix!"
To check whether the necessary files are present in your system, open in SUSE 9.1 the "KDE Control Center", click "YaST2 modules", then "Software", and select "Install/Remove Software". Administrator or super user rights are required! After the packet information has been read, confirm in the "Package Groups" window the pre-selected path "System/GUI/KDE". Double-click "kdelibs3-devel" to select it as the packet to be installed and confirm installation of subordinated packets. For further information on installation of packets please contact the SUSE support.
Start installation by setting the environment variables "KDEDIR" and "QTDIR" appropriately to avoid the error messages indicating that files or directories were not found.
For KDE 3 (SUSE 8.0 or higher), set these variables in the "bash" shell as follows:
export KDEDIR=/opt/kde3
export QTDIR=/usr/lib/qt3
For KDE 2 (SUSE 7.3), set these variables in the "bash" shell as follows:
export KDEDIR=/opt/kde2
export
QTDIR=/usr/lib/qt2
(1) Log in as "root" and start KDE 2 or KDE 3. Open a terminal window.
(2) At the shell prompt, copy the archive "kadslwatch-yy.yy.yy.tar.gz" to your hard drive (you may want to use
the command "mcopy" to copy it from a floppy disk). Unpack the archive using the command
tar -xzvf kadslwatch-yy.yy.yy.tar.gz
where YY.YY.YY is the given K ADSL Watch version.
Example for version 01.00.04:
tar
-xzvf kadslwatch-01.00.04.tar.gz
A directory is created with the name "kadslwatch-yy.yy.yy".
(3) Change to the new directory "kadslwatch-yy.yy.yy".
(4) In SUSE 8.0 or higher, run the file "./configure --enable-mt". In SUSE 7.3 or below, run the file "./configure".
(5) Then enter the command "make".
(6) Finally, run "make install". (This command requires superuser access rights!)
After the installation has been completed, the "Internet" menu in the KDE Application Starter (the "K button") contains a link to K ADSL Watch (SUSE 8.1/8.2 submenu "Controlling"). Up to SUSE 8.0 the default KDE menu settings must be activated in order for the icon to be displayed. In SUSE 8.0 (KDE 3): Open the Control Center and select "Look & Feel: Menu settings", "Standard KDE menu".
NOTE for developers: If you want to regenerate the installation scripts, you must have "autoconf" version 2.2 or higher and "automake" version 1.5 or higher.
NOTE: All users who are to operate K ADSL must have access rights to /dev/capi20! If the current user does not have the necessary access rights, the icon in the KDE panel is crossed out.
After the installation has been completed, the "Internet" menu in the KDE Application Starter (the "K button") contains a link to K ADSL Watch (SUSE 8.1 or higher). Up to SUSE 8.0 the default KDE menu settings must be activated in order for the icon to be displayed. In SUSE 8.0 (KDE 3): Open the Control Center and select "Look & Feel: Menu settings", "Standard KDE menu".
The LEDs indicate the status of the DSL connection. If both the "ADSL" and "ATM" LEDs are green, the DSL access is installed correctly. If all LEDs are green, a connection to the Internet has been dialed up.
If no CAPI 2.0 driver is active in the system, then the icon in the KDE panel is crossed out.
Log File
The first time an DSL connection is established, K ADSL Watch automatically creates a log file (kadslwatch.log) in the
user's home directory. The date, time and duration of the connection and amount of data transferred will be recorded as long
as K ADSL Watch is in operation.
Note: |
This feature requires a CAPI-based DSL connection, is designed for single-user mode only and
is not exhaustive. |
To remove K ADSL Watch from the system, change to the source directory and run the command "make uninstall". (You must have super user access rights!). If K ADSL Watch was installed through YaST, simply use YaST to remove the apllication.
