General Support - Kickoff A New KDE Menui For Kanotix?

Titel: Kickoff A New KDE Menui For Kanotix?
Hi I am interested in trying out Kickoff - the new KDE KMenu joint project between SuSe Linux and the KDE development team.

I have already used this In Suse Linux 10.2 alpha and also in Sabayon (Gentoo) Linux - and it seems very robust and extremely usable.

For a demonstration of this you can look here:

http://home.kde.org/~binner/kickoff/sneak_preview.html

I understand that this is not supported in Kanotix (yet - although it may be if it becomes the official KDE 4 KMenu) however I am fully happy to try it out at my own risk.

KDe currently offer a SVN repository for this, which is located here:

Code:
svn://anonsvn.kde.org/home/kde/branches/work/suse_kickoff

However my question is how do I access this SVN repository and download the source code?

I know it sounds like a bit of a **censored** question - but I don't have any experience with SVN - I have used CVS before to download various things - but again only in a very limited capacity.

Any input anyone can offer in this regard would therefore be gratefully received.

Looks great:

For svn do as root:
apt-get install kdesvn

You can paste the svn-address into the konqueror and it looks like an ftp-site then.

Yeah I figured it out just before you posted, thanks.

However, now I have the source code I am slightly confused.

There are several directories and a number of text files - but no configure script.

The text files that are included are as follows:

Code:
AUTHORS           COPYING      kde.pamd           Makefile.am.in  README
configure.in.bot  INSTALL      kscreensaver.pamd  Makefile.cvs    README.pam
configure.in.in   kdebase.lsm  Mainpage.dox       mkpamserv       startkde

How do I generate the required configure script from this?

Specifically I wouldn't mind being able to build an installable .deb file if at all possible.

There should be an autogen file in there. Run that first. Then ./configure

Hi I got quite far with this. If anyone is interested in installing this, the key appears to be to run make -f Makefile.cvs (although I'm sure that's not news to anyone else around here but me) to generate configure. You need the KDE development libraries kdevelop Autoconf, Automake, and Libtool (or at least I don't think there is any harm in installing them) and you may want to install the Sun Java development libraries too - since the configure appears to look for them. Also you should probably install and configure Beagle search too - as this Kmenu integrates Beagle into it's search function. then you should run ./configure. Make sure you pay close attention to ./configure - as there are several options here that it informs you are a good idea to install.

However I still ran into a snag. I got as far as just about installing it - then I hit a weird error.

After running ./configure (which I ran with no additional options - as I was unsure of what options if any to use) I ran checkinstall to build a Debian based package and this seemed to get really quite far, right up to near the end of 'make install'.

However somewhere near what must be the end of the process (since it took a long time) I got the following error:

Code:

Throughout the build process I get a reoccurring error too, from rm (or remove) saying "rm cannot remove is a directory" so it seems that the build script has some problems with removing items after building them - although I am uncertain if this is fatal.

Can anyone possibly suggest a way to resolve this?

According to apt-file search kbookmarknotifier.h is part of kdelibs4-dev.

Unfortunately I know you have that installed since konq-dev requires it

BTW, you are aware that you are rebuilding a large part of kde from source? Right now you are rebuilding konqueror.

If that is your plan than this may help

No vista doesn't have anything like that. I've used Vista - and like KDE it still uses essentially the old Windows 95 start menu system.

It seems like a lot of work to set up though - I admit. But maybe not so bad if you can set up a second version of KDE that won't be overwritten with the next point release of KDE via apt.

Sorry, the Vista menu is nothing like this. I have Vista installed on my desktop computer - and this is really completely different. There is no copying going on here at all as far as I can see. This was the result iof a 9 month usability study between Suse and the KDE development team - so they certainly didn't expend all those resources simply so that they could copy Vista..

Maybe you didn't watch the video? In any case actually using it is an entirely different experience.

Also I doubt there will ever be a .deb - unless I (or someone else here) manages to build one - since this is a joint project between SuSe and KDE for SuSe 10.2.

The similarities you are pointing to are purely superficial. In practice - having used both menus extensively they work quite differently. The experience is certainly significantly different enough to not say that it is in any way a direct copy. Why not try installing it and finding out for yourself?

Kickoff tends to use grouping much more effectively - whereas Vista is still at it's core not so dissimilar from every other Windows type start menu that has gone before it.

Yes well, each to their own indeed.

Actually it's 6 of one and half a dozen of another. How many different ways are there to show a list of applications anyway?

Perhaps if it ever is included in KDE, you might gain a fuller appreciation for it - or perhaps you will use a much simpler Window manager anyway?

Peronally I am going for a full eye candy desktop, with Kickoff, cool walpapers, cool icons, XGL, Beryl the lot.... I know some peeps don't like this stuff... But It is really just to show linux off to my friends and to encourage them to switch.

Anyway on that note I have made some progress. But I am experiencing a weird error. Not a major one at this juncture - but odd all the same.

I got to step 6 on this guide:

http://yamzz.blogspot.com/2006/10/suse- ... -menu.html

And specifically to this part:

Code:
 /home/kdedev/src/kde/build/suse_kickoff/configure –prefix=/home/kdedev/kde-unstable > \ /home/kde/src/kde/log/suse_kickoff.log 2>&1

Everything has gone smoothly up until this point. The only difference is I didn't want to create a user called kdedev - as I know how hard it is to change a user name in Linux once it is created and I was afraid I would be stuck with it.

Not a big issue, as, as the guide says the choice of user name is arbitrary

So instead I made a user called jebus97

So when I ran the above command it looks like this:

Code:
~/src/kde/build/suse_kickoff$ /home/jebus97/src/kde/build/suse_kickoff/configure –prefix=/home/jebus97/kde-unstable > \ /home/jebus97/src/kde/log/suse_kickoff.log 2>&1

However when I run this command I get the following error:

/src/kde/build/suse_kickoff/configure –prefix=/home/jebus197/kde-unstable > \ /home/jebus97/src/kde/log/suse_kickoff.log 2>&1
-su: /home/jebus97/src/kde/log/suse_kickoff.log: No such file or directory
jebus197@mobile1:~/src/kde/build/suse_kickoff$

However this makes no sense whatsoever, since I have followed this guide to the letter, and when I run ls on the specified directory - everything is as it should be:

Code:
/src/kde/build/suse_kickoff$ ls /home/jebus97/src/kde/log/

suse_kickoff.log

Why is it saying that the required file or directory does not exist, when very clearly it does?

I wish I could exclude the keditbookmarks package that it's trying to compile - as I'm pretty sure I can live without it and that I don't need it, but so far that seems to be the main sticking point.

Anyway, as far as I understand it, this new menu may well become a part of KDE 4. I don't know how official that is, but I believe there is certainly more than just talk of it - so even you guys who don'tl ike it might be stuck with a dilemma when KDE 4 comes out - although
possibly they will allow you to switch between a classic menu and this new menu.

I agree however that it isn't perfect yet - which is why I would prefer if I can to install it on a different account and not have it interfere with my main desktop - but hey a lot of the stuff I mess with isn't always very practical - but it is often good fun to play with if you can make it work.

If anyone wants to try this new KickOff menu for themselves, it's the default on the new Sabayon 3.2 release. (Sabayon is an installable live DVD/CD based on Gentoo.)

It's pretty fast, and packs a bunch of options into a small space.

How does it feel compared with Kanotix? I would be interested in the 'mini' (CD) version though and therefore actually bound to Sabayon 3.1. Is working with the portage system as easy as apt under Debian? How easy is it to update the Kernel? A nice point is that it already includes XFCE4 and *censored* player

Sabayon is my next favorite distro next to Kanotix.

The only issue I really had with it was that it had a hard time working with the Intel HD Audio on my laptop.

Also you have to remember that kickoff is still quite early in development - so it isn't quite ready for prime time yet - or to be judged.

I only flirted with Sabayon briefly, however it is really pretty and XGL/AIGLX/Beryl work pretty much out of the box.

If I could have just got wireless networking going I may have kept it installed longer. But then again, I don't think I could live without all Kano's great scripts.

Nothing for me beats apt-get.

I don't know if they have this saying in Berlin, but once a Chevy guy always a Chevy guide.

A word of warning, though. On the mini-version some python decencies had been removed making the installer non-functional. (Or I had a bad burn.)

The full version gives you a choice of desktop environments to install.

Performance wise it ran pretty fast but I am on a 64 bit machine so Debian does as well.

That said, it did feel and look sharp. It will probably last as my secondary distro for a wile.

3 hours in so no kernel experiments.

Well, actually I have no real reason to change to another Linux but atleast it seems that even my WLAN USB stick (needs module rt2570) is supported out of the box. And just because kickoff I wouldn't switch Winken
A not working installer would be a bad point though.

Sabayon is the Kanotix of Gentoo. If you catch my drift. Pretty polished nowadays, but not a distro i choose to use for daily purposes, as Gentoo is too hard to maintain long term, all that damned compiling. Portage takes ages even to do the portage equivalent to apt-get update. As for updating world, then see u in 2 days.
(edit )Jackiebrown: probably bad burn the Sabayon installers always worked for me- even if they did used to take forever- By the way at what point did i ever criticise anyone for there personal tastes? Stating a different viewpoint is not a criticism.

Your right about the update - the time it took to synce and update (I didn't count he initial one which was horrible) was around 5 minutes. And that was for the equiv of apt-get update.

They did a good job and at least it had an option to install the bootloader to the root partition which seems to be missing a quite a few distros, but I doubt I will keep it as secondary.

I did like the kickoff up until the all programs sections.

I dislike that huge kmenu button (I prefer a menu button in the shape of all the other icons). Also annoying (for me) is the kickoff startmenu for
mainly two and a half reasons:

1. it does not start with "applications" which I would want to be the first and default tab
2. it's bound to the borders of that small menu box which leads to
a) it doesn't look good (IMHO) on displays larger than 1024x768 (I use 1920x1200)
b) I cannot see the application groups and the applications in it together, the applications in a group blend over the groups list (a "feature" I also
dislike in kcontrol because I don't have the overview of all possible actions but at least in kcontrol you can turn on tree view)

Well really rather than just complaining, you would do better to report your concerns to the developers. Complaining after all isn't likely to change anything.

Just a thought.

I agree it isn't perfect. But it is still early beta too. So it's possible you could help it improve.

Really anyway, if Kano could find a way to enable XGL Compiz, Beryl and so on - and all of the fancy effects that we are all seeing on various sites like digg and so on, I wouldn't feel the urge to try anything else.

I am just feeling a bit neglected with all of this eye candy ATM.

I tried using Kano's script to install XGL - and in the end it was a disaster. Maybe I could have fixed it with a lot of messing about - but it destroyed my KDE desktop - and in the end I decided that it was probably faster just to reinstall Kanotix.

Again, like I said I might not always use all this stuff - but it is useful when showing a nice Linux desktop off to others - and it could encourage them to switch.

BTW (as I said already) in Sabayon Beryl/XGL etc works pretty much out of the box (and it works flawlessly too) on my system - so it's not a case that my system is somehow not compatible with either of these.

I really would rather ditch Gentoo completely too - as it is simply utterly impractical to do anything that approaches the convenience of apt-get dist upgrade. It is mind bendingly depressing to thing that if you did the same in gentoo (eg emerge --update world) you might still be waiting to use your computer several days later - once that is you had worked your way through the several dozen random packages that typically tend to fail to compile.

The only reason I have Sabayon installed is as a technology demo. I would be much, much happier if I could do that with Kanotix.

XGL is dead (at least on Debian, dunno about SUSE). The packages available haven't been updated in almost half a year.

I don't know about AIGLX, because Beryl is very easy to get going if you have an NVIDIA card that works with the latest NVIDIA drivers. Kano's driver installation script has options (use the "-h" switch to see them) that will let you choose which driver to install, and configure xorg.conf properly.

If you want more info about using Beryl with NVIDIA, search the forum on "beryl" or just ask!

No I have an ATI X1400 on my laptop. So it has to be XGL. (Or at least I think).

You mean its dead as a project, or just dead on this platform?

As I said I have Beryl and all the various effects running as smooth as butter on Sabayon.

If I could do that in Kanotix - I would be much happier.

Dead on this platform. Novell/Suse came out with XGL, and I don't know if they're still developing it or not. I've got XGL on my laptop (ATI Radeon XPress chipset, fglrx driver) and it's so flaky it's practically unuseable.

Please see the Beryl Wiki for instructions on using AIGLX. It seems to indicate you'll have to use the open-source "radeon" driver to make it work.

You can get Beryl debs from Le coin de Beryl (currently v0.1.2), or use Prometeus' Beryl packages (v0.1.3).

Yeah that's what toasted my Kanotix system once already.

Seriously though man, in Sabayon the whole thing runs as smooth as hot butter off a knife.

They use the official ATI FGLRX drivers too.

It's a pity getting Wireless networking going for Sabayon is such a pain - and it's pity too that the sound on my Laptop sucks when using Sabayon - and while I'm at it, it sucks that gentoo sucks so badly too.

But there we are - it seems we can't have it all.

If u got aiglx in sabayon then its not using fglrx- its using the free xorg driver. You can easily achieve this in kanotix as many others have. (i had it running for a while but then sourced a nvidia card and ditched ati).

No I'm not using aiglx (I wish I could!) I'm using xgl - and I am definitely using ATI FGLRX.

Xlib:  extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
display: :0.0  screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 Generic
OpenGL version string: 1.2 (2.0.6065 (8.29.6)

XGL is much more of a resource hog than AIGLX - but sadly there's not much chance of me being able to change the graphics chip on my laptop.

Just to clarify: Kickoff is totally Suse specific and will probably last no longer than until the arrival of KDE 4 - unless they plan to maintain it in parallel to the official one. That it is kept in the KDE SVN doesn't mean much, see Kerry the Beagle frontend <-> Strigi (guess what will happen).
You can see it as an interesting piece of research or as intermediary throw-away work - similar to much else Novell is doing.

The menu designated to become the officially one is Raptor, Readme is here.

Man KBFX sucks. I tried it and it really isn't that good. They will have to do a lot of work on it before it becomes the official default KDE Kmenu replacement.

You want images - there are loads on Google:

http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl=en ... rch+Images

I promise you the images make it look better than it actually is.

The problem I found with it is that it didn't scale very well on my display.

I hope the KDE team don't let it out of the door before doing some serious usability work with it first. BTW - when is KDE 4 slated for release?
