gparted will see it fine. USB 1 is going to be very slow though. If for some weird reason the kanotix version doesn't do it, try using the livecd, either kanotix or the gparted one. Both should have no problem locating a usb drive.
Well I "think" that I've managed to format the drive, I found a bit about using cfdisk and it appears that it's taken an ext3 formatting.

I haven't tried to connect it via the ethernet again yet - so I don't know how I'll manage to get the browser seeing the web interface so that I can set the IP address for it, but at least it's made a little progress - yes the format, connected via USB1.1 was very slow so I'll need to find out how to manage the connection via the ethernet.

if your laptop has a firewire port, you should get an external drive enclosure w/ firewire support. It's faster than USB 2.0 despite what theoretical specs say. USB 1.1 will be glacial...
It's the desktop system that I'm trying to get it connected to. I have tried to get it working under windows 98SE though, but for reasons that I don't understand, it won't even do that. Firewire isn't an option - the laptop isn't the machine that I need to back up, it's the desktop. It's a lower end system that doesn't have any spare PCI slots for either a USB2 card or a firewire card. Hence having to opt for a USB2/Ethernet casing, but trying to get it configured so it will use the ethernet connection with a static IP address.

I just don't know how many "hoops" I'll have to jump through though, because the casing only (according to the spec) supports fat32, though the format of the actual drive, seems to have worked as ext3 i.e. just because the case only supports fat32 it (AFAIK) shouldn't affect the disc, but I don't really know.

It will mount/unmount (though the unmount tells me that it thinks it's a cdrom/cdrw or something as it tells me that it can't eject) works, I'm just a bit stumped as to what I need to try next.

I think I'll try mounting it and then seeing if I can access it's web interface.

All my efforts to use the info contained within the instructions "came to nought".

The info about how to set it up isn't that helpful - I ended up having to reconfigure my NIC so that it looked at the same range as the devices preset internal IP number before it would let me access the browser based config pages. Make the changes, then change the NIC back to it's original setting.

As it supports SMB and FTP, I should only have to set up one, or both so that I can actually make use of the device.

It might be nice if the case had all three i.e. USB2, Firewire and LAN plugs, as well as multiple file system support (only FAT32 currently supported) as well as full "drag 'n drop" usability, though that may never come, as linux is still "the poor relation" when it comes to hardware.

p.s erm, out of 10, I'd score this case 5 or 6. It feels well put together when complete, but theres plenty of fiddly screw to loose to actually assemble the case.
