Kano,

During 2005 and the first months of 2006 Kanotix was my main OS, it worked beautifully and I was advertising it everywhere.
Towards May/June of this year, there was a shift in my interests and, as a consequence, I built a new computer with new hardware. During a few months some of my new hardware wasn't supported (clearly nothing to do with Kanotix, rather with Debian)

Therefore my interest in Kanotix somewhat decreased.

As you know, while I was using Kanotix, I donated on a regular basis.

I fully understand and support your need to make Kanotix commercially viable. If you decide to put a price tag on it, I'll glady pay it (with one condition, see below)

I fully understand your choice not to base your distro on Sid any longer. Personally I have tracked testing while using Kanotix.

So what now? Ubuntu or Debian?
Both might succeed or not.
Debian has the respect of people who have been using Linux for a number of years. Etch will be very easy to install, but it will still have few or no configuration tools.
So an Etch based Kanotix could attract quite a few people (the first instance which comes in my mind are former Libranet users, and I am one of them)
Ubuntu is very popular at the moment, but there are a few question marks:
1)Will it stay popular forever?
2) Could yet another Ubuntu based distro be one too many?

Certainly *buntus are disliked by many/most Debian users, and definitely I am one of them.

Concluding: the choice is of course up to you, but I will not follow you on the Ubuntu way, nothing personal, of course.
In any case I'll always be grateful for the 16 months or so of pure computing pleasure Kanotix gave me.

Live long and prosper Sehr glücklich

Kano,

I share many of Daniele's opinions and sentiments, but especially the following:
Zitat:

Thank you.

I just wanted to say thank you to Kano at this point too.
Kanotix was the first distro I ever installed (because it was the first to actually work) and I never regreted it.
Good luck for your future plans!

Thanks for a fine distro, kano...wish you best in yoour future endeavors. I for one also share the sentiments of many users here who prefer not to use a *buntu base for your new distro. Something along the lines of Etch should be the way to go..as it is just behind the cutting edge, with a bit more stability.

i've only used kanotix for a few months, but i will forever be thankful to Kano and the rest of the crew for restoring my faith in linux after less than satisfying experiences with Red Hat, Mandrake, etc. a few years ago. like most of the people here, i would prefer if kanotix stayed with debian, whether its the stable or testing branch, rather than ubuntu. but whatever decision kano makes, i wish him the best of luck.

yes, i too want to say "thank you" to Kano and the others for Kanotix. i have enjoyed using it since 2005-03 and learned a lot about linux thanks to the many wise heads in this forum.

a big part of that experience has been to keep on the cutting edge. so, apparently, i too will be migrating elsewhere. not much interest in the *buntus. but i wish Kano the best of luck with his change in direction...

I can't overemphasize the sentiment in previous posts and thanks Kano sincerely for giving me the opportunity to enter the linux world and learn about linux. I'll probably stay with Kanotix all the way but me too prefer Debian, rather then ubuntu... nevertheless, all the best Kano and good luck!

I'd also like to thank Kano and all those who have contributed to
Kanotix and in doing so have made it a great distro. I have used
Kanotix since late 2004 and cannot fully express how much I have
enjoyed the experience.

For me two things have made Kanotix outstanding:
(1) The truly excellent hardware detection and configuration.
(2) The forum is with out doubt the most helpful and spirited
GNU/Linux forum I have ever used.

Like many others I fervently hope Kanotix does not go down the
Ubuntu road. But whatever Kano decides to do in the future I wish
him all the success he desires.

As for me I am, as yet, undecided although I am leaning towards
following slh and staying with Debian sid. If in the end I do stay
with Debian sid it will be because in my experience sid has been
in general remarkably stable and because I delight in being on the
cutting edge.

Just what I think about too. I'll use upcoming Kanotix (hope NOT based on ubuntu) in my server and Debian Sid will power my main cpu. Cant wait hearing something about Slam's new pure debian sid based opensource project.
