Don't understand this!

Does the Breaking News" mean that CC=gcc-4.0 install-nvidia-debian.sh
isn't required as it's been included in a updated update-scripts-kanotix.sh?

Current kernels (2.6.16.20, 2.6.17-rc6) are supposed to get rid of that issue (untested, feedback welcome).

and, btw, if you dont know what the thread is about ,why post to it
if you had the error then you know instantly
if you read carefully
and dist-upgrading requires careful reading at every step

Btw, this issue -- specifically, that you couldn't load the ati/nvidia kernel modules after a dist-upgrade due to a gcc "version magic" error -- got mentioned on IRC and fixed very quickly. Big thanks to etorix and Kano.

In the process, I got hit by a cluebat and realized that OpenGL and GLX are different things, and GLX "direct rendering" isn't enabled on either my nVidia box or my ATI notebook. I haven't done my homework on GLX yet, but if anyone knows a) what "direct rendering" is and what it's good for (other than getting high frame rates in glxgears), and b) how to enable it, I'd appreciate it.

I had seen a new xorg 7.0.21 come through on sid yesterday and *before* I upgraded I thought I would come here to check that it was safe. Given that, it *seemed* that the early posts in this thread were something to do with xorg but it just was not clear if there was a problem, what it was about, and whether it was safe to upgrade.

updating the scripts didn't work for me. don't know why. but the first fix (CC=gcc-4.0 install-vdidia-debian.sh) worked GREAT! thank you!!

Thank you so much etorix for all your vital input, and thank you kano for updating the script. Nvidia installed flawlessly after upgrading to slh's new up-kernel.

Actually the new kernels don't need the fix at all (if gcc is up to date), as they're compiled with gcc-4.1 as well Winken

no luck here. neither updating the script (1000 times) nor upgrading today helped. i am using 2.6.16.20-slh64-smp-1 kernel and i think it has something to do with building the fglrx-driver-xorg package.. the output from the script scrolls too fast and i cant check anything there..(something with a lib.gl.... i think). is there someway around that?

p.s. slh, is there no reiser4 support for the 2.6.17.rc6 kernel?
