I finally got DSL (been on a dialup for 20 years) and used this opportunity to download and burn 2005-04. Ran the live CD, and ran into problems. I'm running this on an older notebook with a dead battery. Since I use it as a desktop anyways, it's no problem, but Kanotix checks the battery status, tells me it's low, and shuts down within a couple seconds of boot. So I boot with ACPI off (about halfway down the GRUB boot list) and that works. I already had 2005-01 installed on my HD (dual boot) so I used the update script in the Kanotix menu to update my HD install and everything appeared to work OK.
I booted up Kanotix 2005-04, it found my DSL connection and everything seemed OK until I powered down. The power down sequence appears to run OK until the very last step and the system hangs with the words "system shut down" at the bottom of the screen. ARGH! I rebooted a couple times, same problem. I searched here, found a 4 page thread with a similar problem, but honestly couldn't figure out how they fixed it.
I've been a happy Kanotix user for over a year, but if this isn't a simple fix I'm afraid I may switch to Ubuntu... |

bigkahiuna, you could try to enable acpi again, and remove laptop-mode-tools, if they are installed.

I had that same problem when I installed kanotix 2005-4 and had not burned the iso to Disk At Once mode, as soon as I burned the cd again, in dao mode, reinstalled kanotix, the problem went away. I can't say for sure that doing that will fix it for you, but it did for me.
On another box I had a similar problem, to install kanotix, I had to disable acpi, but that made the box not shut down, I fixed that by just adding acpi=on to the grub boot string, now it works fine. |

Hi bigkahuna
Maybe the lockup is caused by a separate problem.
One of the forum posters suggested (for Kanotix-2006-easter-rc2 I think) modifying /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc
It might be good practice to back up the file before the edit.. so copy and rename. I have messed up that file with KDE's Control Center, System Administration, Login Manager when I wanted to change to larger fonts for the login-screen, and other tinkering.
Change:
Code:
#TerminateServer=true
To
Code:
#TerminateServer=true
# #TerminateServer=true uncommented by xxxxx to allow proper shutdown
TerminateServer=true
This works for Kanotix-2006-easter-rc4 and maybe for your Kanotix 2005-4.
Bye
