I didn't d-u yesterday having seen the udev warnings but decided to today. After Ctl-Alt-F1, logging in as root, I typed init 3 but kdm didn't stop. I can'see anything wrong with the rc3.d folder which appears to have all the correct links in place.

I then try to get back to init 5 but kde doesn't start after telling me kdm is already running.

The problem may have arisen from my 6 Sep d-u where initscripts was upgraded. I noticed there was a further update yesterday so I tried upgrading that on its own but kdm still doesn't stop when I go to run level 3.

Anyone else had this problem? How do I get the runlevel scripts linking and running properly?

PS I also have started getting a failed mtab error at boot - something like /sys already running

The upgrade-rc.d Skript in the 6.9.06 Version of sysv-rc was properly broken:

sysvinit (2.86.ds1-18) unstable; urgency=low

  In version 2.86.ds1-16 of the sysv-rc package released 2006-09-06,

  the update-rc.d script was broken.  When used to to update symlinks

  it would remove all symlinks for a init.d script if such symlinks

  existed, and add them if they were missing.  This broke all packages

  being upgraded after the new version was installed, as their init.d

  scripts will no longer be executed.  This problem was fixed in

  version 2.86.ds1-18, but the broken packages will stay broken until

  their postinst scripts are executed again.

  Those with packages being broken from this bug can fix it by using

  'apt-get --reinstall install package' on the affected packages.  A

  quick way out is to reinstall all the packages with scripts in

  /etc/init.d/.

    for p in `dpkg -S /etc/init.d/*|cut -d: -f1|sort -u`; do

      apt-get --reinstall install -y $p

In the actual sysv-rc ( ds1-18 ) the problem was fixed, but you must recreate the Startuplinks (for services that was upgraded with the broken update-rc.d Script) with the three-liner:

Thanks Hack-o-Master! That was a bit daunting but it has sorted out the issue. There are probably a lot of people doing their d-u's thinking kdm has stopped and it hasn't when they ener run level 3.

It takes about 20 minutes to 'get back to normal' when you run the above code.
