Post subject: CUPs has died !  PostPosted: Sep 04, 2006 - 12:03 AM

Ive just done some APT-GET update and installed some new packages.. Somewhere in the process it did ask about the cupsd.conf file and I chose to keep the original which was the default action. I am pretty sure a new CUPS was installed. There are a few new things in CUPs that were not there before.

My existing printer will not print anymore at all.. Ive looked at the cups error log and it seems to sugest that there are permission issues with lp0 . Its rather hard to understand. Ive messed with this for hours and really managed to get nowhere.. I am thinking of uninstalling CUPs and trying a reinstall but its only a long shot.

The printer is a EPSON Stylus C87 which isnt really supported but seemed to work ok if I installed it as a C86 and used CUPS with guttenprint v5.0.0 driver previously.

Any help on this would be great. CUPs is just broken for now.

try:

Code:

#apt-get remove --purge cupsys
#apt-get install cupsys

the same thing happened to me a while back, and that fixed it

After reinstalling cupsys and all the other apps which were removed you need to reinstall your printer. Some reported that it just worked through cups itself in a browser: http://localhost:631

Next step: you might need to edit /etc/cups/cupsys.conf as root and comment one line that it looks like that:
Code:
# Listen /var/run/cups/cups.sock

If all that does not work, feel free to search the forum, there are a lot of threads about recent problems with cups.

fatbloke and I recently had a problem were openoffice.org writer wouldn't find the default printer. Eventual 'solution' was to remove and reinstall all cupsys and related packages. See here: http://kanotix.com/PNphpBB2-viewtopic-t-20464.html

Well .. I am still stuck.. Ive uninstalled with purge and reinstalled cupsys. Thanks for the tips maybee I am closer to getting this going. Ive edited out the Listen line on the config file as well as sugested.

Reinstalled the printer and now the error log file says new things. Whats this about ?
E [06/Sep/2006:11:50:30 +0930] [Job 8] ijsgutenprint: bad key code -4
E [06/Sep/2006:11:50:30 +0930] [Job 8] ijsgutenprint: the version of Gutenprint software installed (5.0.0) does not match the PPD file (5.0.0-rc2).

Not sure whats its on about with the PPD file but obviuosly its a version issue.

Any more ideas ?

have you tried upgrading the gutenprint drivers?

Code:

#apt-get install cupsys-driver-gutenprint foomatic-db-gutenprint

I didn't see in your earlier posts what version of Kanotix you are running. I had a very persistent problem when I was running 2005-04 and didn't resolve it until I upgraded to 2006-Easter using the CD and did the distro-upgrade using h2's great script: see http://techpatterns.com/forums/about736.html. Then I configured the printer (HP 7260 in my case) in Firefox with [url]localhost:631[/url]. Works great now.

I got it.. Thanks folks .. I just updated/reinstalled the "cupsys-driver-gutenprint" and "cupsys-driver-gimpprint" again and then reinstalled the driver for the printer. I noticed that when I did that the number of available drivers to choose from increases from 2 up to about 12 now ..

Thanks for the help. Kanotix is Cool. This install now really rocks ..
