I note that in the specs for Kanotix 2006-01-RC2 it says
"Kernel 2.6.17.13 with many patches".
Is one of these patches a fix for the SATA problem with
the VIA chipset vt8251?
If not will a later version of Kanotix 2006-01 be supplied
with kernel 2.6.18 as this kernel has SATA support for the
vt8251? |

There is a 2.6.18 kernel for you in the left hand column of this page.
In each of the kernel packages there is a script to build the kernel source. Read the script, then you'll know which patches were applied. |

Obviously I didn't make myself clear.
This is a long standing problem with VIA's vt8251
chipset.
Without the aforesaid vt8251 patch to kernel 2.6.17
Kanotix 2006-01-RCx WILL NOT install on a SATA
drive if the motherboard uses the VIA vt8251 chipset.
Without the appropriate patched kernel or kernel 2.6.18
on the installation CD installation cannot take place
because the kernel cannot write to the SATA drive.
I know I've tried it!
Also see this long thread:-

Some of my friends have motherboards (Asus A8V-MV)
with this chipset and SATA drives. I've convinced them to
try Kanotix but we can't install it if the kernel can't "see"
the SATA drive.
Incidently I've no such problems with my dear old SiS 735
chipset mobo (K7S5A). And I always install slh's kernels
the moment they appear. Many thanks slh! |

LiveCd mode;
Use unionfs, patch the kernel yourself, install to hard drive.
I am not familiar with this patch,is it even in any of the kanotix or slh kernel's? |

I hope Kano puts 2.6.18 in a RC4 ASAP. the work has been done for that to happen already. |

kelmo: I second that.
I suspect, with a not a little effort, I could produce a Kanotix
CD with a 2.6.18 kernel. But to me that would be an insult to
Kano and the team. ie. Like making love to the wife while
fantsizing she's someone else. Nobody's hurt, the experience
is enhanced, but, somehow it feels sordid.
Perhaps Kano could tell us if the kernel on 2006-01-RCx has the
vt8251 patch or if 2.6.18 will be included in a later edition? |
