... I guess it's my own damn fault for running closed-source software ... especially as root:

Should I give up my 3d games and googleearth and use only the nv driver? |

It has allegedly been fixed in 9625 beta.
However, that fix apparently took about 2 years to happen, and it took 2 months for nvidia to get it fixed even after they accepted it as a bug.
And it's still not really fixed since the fix only is in the current beta driver.
So it will only be truly fixed once 9625 comes out as stable. Which could be months more.
When you compare this to the speed of firefox or kernel security issues getting fixed it's hard not to agree with open source / free software advocates who point out how much faster bugs can get fixed when you have access to the source code. |

Well, you should be for being using open source, or if you really are then, you do know there's a work-around that's been posted on the kanotix forums, right? |

Its my observation that Linux is getting increasingly less stable....
Back in the old days (ahhhh) I never had a desktop lock up ... and the worst that would happen if X did completely freeze would be swtich to a virtual terminal or at worse log in remotely and kill X....
and all this has happened SINCE 90% of graphics card manufacturers have been bought out/ gone under and we are left with closed source drivers only, at least for 3d. |
