I really, really like Kanotix. I like everything about it-- the way it looks and operates, the ease with which you can configure it with Kano's scripts, the speed it moves-- just everything. Obviously, I have been concerned by the departure of slh and others and I hope that Kanotix continues even if it isn't based on Debian Sid.

As an experiment, I decided to apt-pin Kanotix to Testing to see what happened. Disclaimer-- I am not an expert. I found the steps for doing this readily available on the Internet. I'm sure there are better ways of doing this, but here's what I did.

I began with a fresh install of Kanotix 2006-01-RC4 on an unused partition. As you know, that takes about 10 minutes. I rebooted and logged back in.

Next, as root, I added the following to the end of the /etc/apt/preferences file:

Package: *

Pin: release a=testing

Pin-Priority: 1001

This forces all packages to downgrade to the version in the Testing repositories. (In my case, there were no downgrades-- everything that was in the RC4 release is now in Testing.)

Third, again as root, I commented out all lines in my /etc/apt/sources.list file except the following:

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free

Fourth, I ran the apt-get update command as root in the terminal.

Fifth, I ran apt-get update. This last step took an hour on my broadband connection. (I probably should have used aptitude instead and I will next time.)

Next, I deleted the language in /etc/apt/preferences that I added in step two and changed the file to read:

Package: *

Pin: release a=testing

Pin-Priority: 500

Package: *

Pin: release a=unstable

Pin-Priority: 200

Package: *

Pin: release a=experimental

Pin-Priority: 50

I rebooted and logged in again, then moved slowly through the installed applications for any sign of trouble. I found ... nothing wrong.

The result is a Kanotix installation based on Etch/Testing and it seems to be working fine. All of Kano's scripts are here (I've already adjusted the screen resolution and the dpi and installed an nvidia driver and the msttcorefonts).

So far, so good. I'll use this install for several days before I try it on my real Kanotix installation. |

Thats cool, you need to post back in a few weeks and tell us if any of the d-u's were rough. Kano has been telling me that debian/testing is too stressful to make a stable desktop for everyone to use.

I tried doing that on a clean install, but since etch getting close to freeze, there weren't any bad packages coming into unstable for a while, so i changed to unstable again. I might decide to try testing again on this laptop since I use it for school.

Also, it may not be a good idea to stay purely testing, for instance, flash player 9 beta is in unstable right now, and that is a much wanted improvement. |

          | Well, if it's only for the flash player then just get the plugin installer from the Adobe Labs page. No unstable repo needed then. |
