Asunto: New driver's for Nvidia?  MensajePublicado: 06 Jul, 2006 - 10:46 PM

How can I install new drivers for nvidia? I found whatever they have on their site but I imagine it would be good to know how to write a program if you wanted to use them or at least they just don't make sense to me. or maybe, Kanotix or apt will do it? I read the manual so do I run the script after downloading drivers or does it get them for me? and can you run the scripts in kde or do I run them in text mode (for lack of a better term) Thank you.

Yes there is a better way. The Kanotix way! Smilie Kano has made a simple script for you to use. NEVER use the nvidia installer - NEVER. Nor should you install any nvidia pkgs from Debian as they are not necessary.
Código:
su
update-scripts-kanotix.sh

Now you must leave the Xwindows environment and install the drivers. The script will restart your Xwindow session after it finishes. You've been warned!

[Alt] + [Ctrl] + [F1]
Código:
su
install-nvidia-debian.sh

Thanks works well, I've gone through so many Linux distros, Kanotix is the best! support for debian pakages plus all these great ways of doing things. Since I did this my computer has froze a couple times though, would installing this make it freeze possibly? And in the manual it also shows the code init 3, is it necessary?

It shouldn't be necessary with install-nvidia-debian.sh but I
always do init 3 anyway.

After [Alt] + [Ctrl] + [F1] and su
just enter init 3
and then run install-nvidia-debian.sh

I remember once I forgot my usual practice and forgot
to enter init 3. Afterwards I had the same problem as you.
This was remedied by entering init 3 and re-running the
install script.

Hope this helps.

Nevermind, it doesn't work still, when I try to install the driver, it says the installation was changed and it tries to uninstall the driver but it still runs after I return to kde and it freezes.

I don't use nvidia, so I don't know if this will work

Open control center > kanotix > display (log in as admin) > drivers > generic and click on nv click apply.

You can also try h2's script

Bad news when I boot up in Kanotix the startup script says xdm is not the default and stops booting... I think. after that I can type all I want but it doesn't do anything so I'm running off the cd now hopefully sombody can help me, oh ps I did the h2's script. I'll try to work it out myself but I hope I can fix it.

The nv driver is the standard Xorg non-accelerated Nvidia driver. the accelerated Nvidia driver is called 'nvidia'. Smilie

The problem is not the nvidia driver but rather your display manager KDM. I have seen others with this same problem recently. Not sure what the fix is. You can try a few things:
Código:
dpkg-reconfigure kdm

Select KDM.
OR
Código:
apt-get install gdm

Select GDM as default.

But if you're using the nv driver the you do not have 3D. Test like so:
Código:
glxinfo |grep rendering

Cita:

Código:
apt-get install knxcc-kde

but I apparently have all sorts of problems anyhow.

Like what?

Ok, now that your back to the "non-accelerated Nvidia driver" try installing the Nvidia driver, this sometimes worked for me in the past, kind of like "rolling back" and reinstalling. It has worked for me and ATI in the past, make sure you do Ctrl+Alt+Esc first or like mzilikazi says apt-get install knxcc-kde and do it from there, or h2's script. Hope this works, it might not but worth a try

It seems to me that the nvidia drivers are the problem. Weinen Just have to wait for new drivers. Kde seems to run just fine I just can't have the eye candy. or maybe I could use some older dirvers anyone know where to get them? I had to use outdated drivers in microsoft windows so my graphics card would work correctly.
