Well check out ISO Master. There is even a .deb available and it works fine on Debian Sid. Best of all, it's GTK! Winken

/home/devil/.gtkrc-2.0:11: error: unexpected identifier `name', expected character `='
ISO Master fatal error: changeFsDirectory(): stat(newSrcPathAndName, &nextItemInfo) failed

What does ISO Master actually do? ... ie what do people use it for and why?

The website says "an open-source, graphical CD image editor that runs on Linux" ... but I don't understand what I could use ISO Master for?

Say you had an ISO created and you wanted to put a "readme.txt" file on it without having to recreate it. Or you wanted to delete that file.

Or in the case of Slax (didn't they fund this?), which has a modules directory on the live CD, where you can put pre-made modules, which add programs to the base live distro, you could open the ISO, download and save modules to that directory, then save your changes, without having to learn how to do it from the command line.

In Windows' case, a program like WinISO lets you view the contents of an ISO, and add files to and delete files from an ISO file. Which is pretty nifty.

Ahhh thanks for explaining it eco2geek ... that sounds very nice Smilie

I'm guessing that it wouldn't work on a kanotix ISO as the kanotix live cd uses compression?

It'd open the Kanotix ISO itself, but not the compressed filesystem on the ISO (the large /KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX file).

IsoMaster works for me so far...a rather basic program, but very promising.

One possible use could be to edit /grub/boot/menu.lst on the Kanotix LiveCD to create a LiveCD that has special cheat codes enabled by default (e.g., home=scan, myconf=scan, fromiso=K*.iso). As eco2geek pointed out, files outside of /KNOPPIX are not compressed, so you can edit them to your liking.

This is what I get when I try to create a new Kanotix iso with an edited menu.lst on it. Any suggestions?

Hm, I thought "master" implied some kind of mastering function. So, what can it do apart from mounting an iso file and extracting files from it?

As long as this tool does not more than giving you read access to ISO files, it's useless, because this is something already implemented in Kanotix in several different ways:

Simply open the ISO file with Konqueror (or - not so pretty, but faster - mc) and wait. Depending on the file size the ISO opens after seconds, up to 1 minute. Then simply copy files out to wherever you desire.

The more geeky version of this is to mount the ISO file, i.e.:
Código:
mkdir /mnt/test
mount -t iso9660 -o loop KANOTIX-2006-01-RC3.iso /mnt/test

After that you are able to browse it inside /mnt/test and copy out files.

Greetings,
Chris

Well fortunately that isn't all it does. Winken
From the front page:

This is an early version but is usable for simple image editing.

You can't edit an iso simpy by loop mounting it. And we know that just like the Kanotix RC's it needs testing to improve it.

Cita:
Remember there is no boot record support yet so you cannot create bootable CD images.

Now that will be a slick feature (when/if it works).

You should be able to add and subtract files and folders from the image using ISOMaster. When bootable image support is added then its great for making remasters of say, the kanotix cd for example.

EDIT: even make custom Windoze CD's in Linux as well Winken

I have tried Isomaster before but it didn't work as well as I wanted, if I remember right id couldn't work with .img files. Maybe I should let it have a second chance now. Anyway I have used UltraIso with wine a long time now and it works very good.

I saw a kanotix-version of isomaster yesterday new in the thorhammer repo.

Tried it, but you can nearly do the same with krusader.
You can't open the compressed Kanotix file.

Greetings
Daddy-G
