Guys,

Please take this post as it's intended, noob-to-noob. Such was the grief in getting this to work I hope this post helps someone set things up A LOT QUICKER than the 10 days it took me! I don't claim to be a Linux expert, I'm just trying to help and do my bit.

I had to do loads of Googling and experimentation with the settings to get this mother to work - here's my exact setup details.

I have a Dell Latitude CPi D266XT with BIOS version A12. In the BIOS I have the soundcard set to half-duplex.

Hardware - I have an on-board Crystal Sounds CS4237B soundcard. NOTE the driver you need is actually snd-cs4236 and I didn't use alsaconf for the setup.

Now for the software versions :-
Linux version 2.6.14-kanotix-9, Debian 4.0.2-5 and KDE Release 3.4.3.

Add the following line to the /etc/modules file:-

snd-cs4236 port=0x530 cport=0x210 mpu_port=0x330 fm_port=0x388 isapnp=0 dma1=1 dma2=0 irq=5

*If you get a distorted sound - you're almost there you just need to experiment with the options which are stated after snd-cs4236.

I found the following threads most heplful:-

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?t=296835
and
http://lists.debian.org/debian-laptop/2005/10/msg00112.html

Use the alsamixer shell command all turn all the volume controls (use the right arrow to get to all the controls) up to 100 while experimenting - then turn down once setup is complete.

Good Luck Sehr glücklich

I need to give you guys an update.

I've just upgraded my hard drive on the laptop and I've found I had to change the dma settings. My settings now look like this:-

snd-cs4236 port=0x530 cport=0x210 mpu_port=0x330 fm_port=0x388 isapnp=0 dma1=0 dma2=1 irq=5

I don't know why this should be? Verrückt But it's working again. Sehr glücklich

Also I missed this detail from my original post, don't forget to save your alsamixer settings with the 'alsactl store' shell command when logged in as root.

Hi cartman,
I have the exact same Dell notebook, and the exact same no-sound problem. The distro is Mepis 7M AntiX.
When trying to save your edit to the 'modules'-file, I get the report 'not able to open file'. Any idea what could be causing this, I did login as Superuser/root (I believe... Lachen )

Thanks,
V.

File seems like carved in stone Verrückt
It just won't edit with Rox: keep getting 'can't open file' when saving
