Hello All

I am completely new to Kanotix. I had searched on the Internet and read that I would be able to use a Kanotix boot CD and access the hard drive on my laptop that I am having problems with. I want to be able to delete files on it. It has XP Home installed on it.

I used the recent version of Kanotix and burnt a CD. Everything seems to work fine when I boot into Kanotix. I have tried to figure out how to get to the laptop's hard drive with no success.

I joined this forum and did a search and read some posts a lot of which I don't understand but couldn't seem to find a solution to my problem. If it is quite obvious and I missed it I apologize. I read a post about editing a file and something about fstab but didn't understand it.

If someone could tell me if it is indeed possible to boot to Kanotix from my laptop and access the hard drive to delete files I would appreciate it.

Thank you,

mugsy

Most likely the ntfs partiton has errors, you can try something like

su
ntfsfix /dev/sda1

then it should mount again.

I tried what you said but no luck. Remember I don't know Kanotix at all. I try to find the hard drive in file manager with no luck. Don't know where to look.

I assume you meant to go into the shell to do this. Will the hard drive on the laptop be sda1. This certainly isn't as easy as the information I read. I am at a complete loss.

If I can't boot with a live CD easy with Kanotix can someone suggest something else to use. I thought the hard drvie would be easily accessible. lol
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you.

Well usually a laptop has got only one hd, so it is sda, and the first partition is usually 1, until you have got a recovery one first. You can check with:

su

fdisk -l
